Ww2 book from German perspective for 12 yr old

Asked daughter what book she wanted and bizarrely instead of saying Harry Potter etc she said “a ww2 book from German perspective”!

Any recommendations? She’s just turning 12

The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer. On the boundaries of what’s suitable for a 12yr old though - warts and all description of fighting on the eastern front.

Is she thinking fiction set then, or more of a historic account of events?

No specific recommendations, and it’s the wrong conflict, but All Quiet On The Western Front is excellent.

This was a good read he served on u-boats and by all his accounts according to his diaries the conditions were very poor
as you would expect

The Diary of Anne Frank, obvious recommendation.

Not form the German perspective but it will make things real to a 12yr old girl.

'I flew for the Fuhrer' Is a good German Fighter pilots dangerous exploits and gradual disillusionment with the whole thing.

Did his bit for his side and shot down loads of allied chaps unfortunately.

Diving Eagle by Peter Stahl - The memoir of a Junkers 88 pilot. Really gives a picture of day to day life for a bomber pilot.



A while since I read it, but I recall him being sent on a mission from France over England when there was low cloud down to the ground for the whole sortie, and no chance of finding the target. No doubt just to meet some general's figures for the month.

The Last Panzer and Tiger Tracks are translations from a German panzer commander fighting on the Eastern Front. Again, pulls no punches in places so perhaps one for a future year if your daughter is still interested.

Not suitable for a 12yo I'd say. 16 maybe. And its long and slow going.
