Renault Megane 2018 views

Hello Phers,
TGIF - Can you please share your expert opinion and personal experience about 2018ish Renault Megance 1.3 or 1.2 ? Are they well built & reliable workhorses? Lot is said about Renault/Citroen weak transmissions and rubbery gear shift. Is this issue sorted in latest models ?
If not what do you think should be a better option in equal size and money. Thanks.
Thanks in advance.

We have a 2018 Clio as a family runabout and it's great, I think Renaults have improved since the tie up with Nissan, I've had 2 Lagunas (company cars), a Clio 182 and a Megane Scenic (family bus) and they never let me down.
Prime alternative to a Megane in my mind would be a Focus, Astra, maybe something Korea like a i30 or a Kia Pro Ceed?

Agreed, I think they are good. As mentioned, go for the 1.3 as it is a later, improved version without the oil consumption issues. They are a direct injection engine, so can suffer from carbon buildup that then often leads to poor fuel consumption, but can happen with lots of cars like this these days. You can avoid it if you go for a newer car as possible with a good service history that's not done too many miles. Driving them sedately exacerbates the problem, so give them a good thrashing every so often!
Luckily I don't think they share any bits with Citroen or Peugeot, they are under different ownership. Those 1.2 Puretech engines that PSA make are garbage, best avoided.
Some ideas for alternatives, though I'd consider a Megane at least as good as any of these
