Thinking outside the box car wise

So I currently don’t have my own vehicle and have been looking for a replacement for my old Golf GTD I sold due to having loads of issues. Only had it 3 months but it was a bit of a nightmare.
I have been looking at the Golf GTI 2016 models but not sure I’m willing to spend that amount of money on the car this time due to making a loss on the previous one. I have also looked at the Focus ST mk3 but it doesn’t really do it for me.
The reality is I don’t do too much driving as I mostly work from home. I have now set a new budget of £10000. The car must be a petrol this time. It’s just me and my wife and we have another car so can be any size really.
I have had a look at the fiesta ST and Polo GTI too but not too sure about them. I had a fiesta ST before (previous generation) and at the time I loved it but was a pig to resell.
Any other options open to me I should consider ?

Why not get something a bit older, but with low mileage that has been well looked after, like this FN2 Honda Civic Type R? Won't have the torque shove of a Golf GTD, but you can rev it all the way out to 8000 rpm. Should also be much more reliable and won't depreciate too much either hopefully

I'm in a sort of similar position work wise, but I'm 24 and still living at home and not driven for the last 3 years or so because I was finishing final year of uni and then covid happened and my car was written off right before first lockdown.
Feel free to check out the thread I made, it's now on page 2 I think because I've probably got to hold off for a few weeks or maybe wait until later in January or Feb because of the current weather and not much point rushing when it's snowing and the cars are getting iced up practically every other day.
Which generation Fiesta ST was it? The MK6 2.0 or the MK7 1.6? I think if you get a MK7 and it has under say 45k miles when you go to sell, then it shouldn't be too difficult at all. I was pretty surprised a FB friend of mine actually got 11k just a couple days ago for a ST-2 privately, when that's ST-3 money, but it was a clean unmodified example in white with around 35k miles.
I've been personally considering MK5 Golf GTIs, but if you had issues running a MK7 then I'm not sure a MK5 is any more reliable. My parents would rather me get something newer so I may end up with something like a MK8 Fiesta ST or newer Golf/Polo or even a Up GTI if I wait a few more months and save a bit more.
How important is 3 door or 5 door? Civic Type R FN2 could be a decent shout but the looks are a bit marmite I suppose and also apparently the ride quality is sort of harsh. Think the Abarths are even worse though from what I've heard. Depends how hot it needs to be, but other suggestions I was given were like Vauxhall Astra GTCs, Alfa Romeo Mitos/Guilietas and Suzuki Swift Sport.
I'm pretty unsure myself so if you manage to go have a hunt sooner than me, I'd be interested to know how the different cars compare to you. My previous car was a 140 ST-Line MK7.5, and who knows, I may just end up getting another and doing the mods I couldn't really do last time, but the ST is a much better platform for that, but has its drawbacks where the seats may be too hugging for me, keyless entry security issues, and just general image on the road, but I think actually the MK7 ST sometimes goes under the radar if it's not been changed too much on the exterior and is in a understated colour.

There's two pretty similar products out there which try to stop that and are like a go-to from doing my research years ago and they're still being installed now. Viper 106v and Sterling Excel. Thing you can get more complex immobilisers but those seem to do the job. Still, a lot of STs and Range Rovers etc seem to be getting targeted from some boot vulnerabilities or the key spot in the driver's door handle. Moving the OBD port away is probably not a bad idea unless you need it for tuning or diagnostics.I know what you mean though, that's part of the reason I got a ST-Line rather than a ST as my first car and specifically didn't spec keyless entry.

Not only will they be more fun to drive than a hatch and probably less likely to be nicked, they're generally a better bet for residuals too.
The ND MX-5 1.5 is probably the safest bet maintenance wise, don't think rust has caught up with them yet.

Shout out for a Peugeot 208 GTI Prestige at this budget.
Serious laugh to drive and is proper chuckable. A great interior and spec. Very easy to drive, parts are good value, insurance cheap, very economical for a hot hatch and doesn’t get targeted to get nicked.
