N57 rough idle when cold
Discussion
Then definitely worth having it code read to see if anything comes up. Often it can just be one or two out, but worth replacing all 6.
I didn't do the controller, I don't think they're as troublesome on the N57 as the M57.
It's not a particularly expensive job in the scheme of things, but certainly glad I changed them when I did.

Have scanned codes, no fault codes show up. No CEL on dash. Someone else has suggested swirl flap on intake manifold could be stuck, but I would've expected the car to drive sluggish and throw a CEL up.I didn't do the controller, I don't think they're as troublesome on the N57 as the M57.

I would try to establish if the EGR has ever been worked on. N57's had EGR cooler recalls, but the EGR itself may be coked up and require cleaning. I blanked mine 50k ago and had it mapped out completely to avoid such issues.
Whats the milage?
Have you had the intake manifold cleaned?
My n57 is a bit lumpy at idle and its down to a swirl flap issue. No warning lights but throws up a code. When its a bit warmer I’m going to take the intake manifold off and give it a clean as I suspect it’s a build up of carbon thats stopping the swirl flaps from operating.
I’d be weary of removing them as it can effect the dpf regen, it happens more often leading to expensive issues down the line. The egr cooler the same.
The emission equipment is there for a reason and I don’t agree with by passing it or blanking it off. Diesel is dirty as it is, you don’t need to make it worse because you’re a cheap skate imo.

I would agree that there is no need to remove the swirl flaps, but blanking and mapping the EGR valve closed, if done correctly does not impact on DPF regeneration. It simply prevents the clogging of the valve and the manifold.
My EGR has been blanked for 50k+ and the DPF values are absolutely fine and it regens without issue.

Don't forget to also check the MAP sensor. It's nozzle often clogs up with coal jelly, which can under report the manifold pressure.
Whilst I whole heartedly agree with EGR deleting (humans don't swallow their own farts, so why should engines?) but isn't it illegal? Do you have to refit it prior to each MOT?

Have you just blanked it with a metal plate? I've heard plenty of horror stories of EGR blanking going on to wreck the DPFMy EGR has been blanked for 50k+ and the DPF values are absolutely fine and it regens without issue.
I'm sure if you just blanked it without removing from the map, it would likely cause DPF issues later on.
I have a 2011 530d.
It began playing up on cold starts. I thought (wrongly) it was running OK when warm.
My booking at a well respected specialist, Darren Woods, couldn't come soon enough, it was due a service anyway so it all fitted in well.
Turned out to be various issues, main problem was the swirl flaps had failed and stuck closed, I had a new thermostat fitted as requested and a new glow plug controller, on the service they found a weep on some water flange so that was replaced, in all the car got a real going over including having the calipers painted and inlet cleaned and the faulty flaps went in the bin so I am flap free now.
Like I said I thought it was running OK when warm, how wrong I was. It has been transformed. Goes like it should now.
Just need to monitor any changes in MPG. £1000 well spent.
