Family zoom on Friday night (Dad, Sister and myself) and we were making final decisions on the food for Christmas; just interested to know what others are planning. We typically stay traditional but mix up the Christmas day main year to year (Turkey/Goose/Wellington etc); this year we're going a bit spicy.

24th: Surf & Turf using a dodd of beef left over from last year's homemade Beef Wellington (that's been frozen obvs) + king prawns from costco

25th: Starter of spicy King Prawn with salmon & soft cheese, main of Tandoori Roast Chicken and a lot of sides and trimmings, dessert of Poached Apple and Cherry with hot crème anglaise and ice cream

26th: Honey Roast Ham with some visiting extended family, homemade eton mess for dessert, or maybe a cheesecake.

Copious amounts of snacks and nibbles throughout the days. There are only 3 of us but Christmas is always a bit of gorge for us.

Being very lazy this year.

Starter: Blini’s, sour cream, lumpfish caviar

Main: Beef hotpot (using very good stock and with very good bread for juices) https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/beef_hotpot_597...

After: cheese and charcuterie, figs and chutneys etc.

Really can’t be bothered this year, I find it very stressful and I never get to enjoy the day if I go all out.

Stuffed mushroom for starter, vegan "turkey" and glazed "ham" for main with usual trimmings, chocolate (no)cheese cake as let's face it, Christmas pudding is st. Hummus and drinkers for me, real cheese board for the others.

Lager, cava, gin and red wine to wash it all down.

Quite like the Christmas day meal and company but it is hard work when hosting.

10 at ours this year. Starter prawn and crayfish salad, then honey roast ham and fillet of beef with the usual trimmings followed by chocolate cake/cheese and crackers. Simple, quickish, then enjoy the rest of the day.

Lazy here this year. Some sort of prawn starter, mushroom wellington for main and a load of cheese to get us through the afternoon.
Probably rinse and repeat on Boxing day.

Christmas is sorted, but I'm now starting to focus on/stress about NYE.

We have 11 adults and 2 children staying with us, and I'm planning to cook a meal we can all sit down and eat together. I'm absolutely out of inspiration though.

I don't want to do a roast of any kind, because it's all everyone will have been eating for a week. I don't want anything super-heavy, as it's a party evening. Ideally it might be nice if it was something interactive, and something that can be prepped before time.

Annoyingly I wasted my best idea on a group of the same folks when they came recently, by making DIY tacos with an incredible piece of brisket.

Any suggestions?

I made this for two the other day, easy enough to ramp up the amounts?

NYE is always either an early meal out or a takeaway for us tbh, especially after the previous week of cooking and gluttony

Had 40 people round for a Christmas party last weekend.

Made 150 miniature puff pastry pies with various fillings a couple of weeks prior and left in freezer. Defrosted night before and then 20 mins in the oven.

Also cooked 5kg of roasties and provided little pots of gravy for everyone to dip in as we were all stood up. Went down well!

Pie and mash is so simple, but it might actually be a winner... Some fancy canapes for starters, everyone gets their choice of pie from our amazing local butcher, then industrial quantities of buttery mash and some veg on the side.

Only downside is that it's dangerously close to a roast, but it's going on the list of 'potentials'. Thank you.

Lowering the tone and going full council this year by doing a buffet, wont be 50 shades of beige from Iceland though as that's going a bit too far! Just stuff like chicken wings, deli meats, nice salad, mix of cheeses and so on. Mrs is not a great fan of Christmas and only a few of us so job done.

Will be doing to whole roast dinner for the Mrs and I on boxing day so please don't string me up just yet lol

I’m keeping it more casual this year and might steel your taco idea but broaden it to include nachos and fajitas. Maybe make a few toppings like guacamole, couple of salsas etc and let people build what they want from the chicken fajitas mix and spicy brisket mix. If they want to top nachos I can flash it under the grill to melt cheese etc.

The brisket recipe I followed was so simple. 8hrs in the slow cooker with stock, juice and herbs/veg. Make your own guac and pico de gallo, quick pickle some onions, and you're there. I did a Mexican salad with roasted corn on the side that always goes down well.
