I've had a great time with my 987.2 Cayman but it's time to upgrade to something a bit more practical and faster. My budget is around £25k. I've looked at the cars below but the insurance quotes are coming back 2-3x times similar or more expensive Cayman/Boxsters. I know it's purely down to stats (being in London obviously doesn't help) but I would have assumed 11 years NCB would have the quotes a bit closer.

Are there any fast cars that are particularly good for insurance?

Are the Porsches some sort of anomaly?

Insurance premiums have shot up this year, I've owned my M240i for a 2 1/2 years and the insurance on it this year jumped from £350 last yeat to £560 for no obvious reason as I too have years of no claims, no accidents etc, I shopped around and couldn't get near last years quote.

At a guess I'd say that lot are very nickable.

I just insured my newly purchased BMW M2 for £440. I thought this was pretty good value considering the performance and also my first M car.

I have 14 years NCD, live in the middle of nowhere and do 10k miles per annum.

Claims costs mostly with a dash of operating costs. Claims frequency is back to usual after lockdowns broadly also.

Think that is abit if a generalisation. My M140 has just got up £40 to £280 pa. Wife’s JCW went down £3 to £168 pa.

FWIW, I had a fully loaded 987.2 Cayman and sold it because I thought I was just getting too old for whizzing around like a teenager. Bad mistake! I bought a convertible E400 Merc. Plenty fast and with every comfort man could want. Within a few months I was as bored as hell, by which time the second hand 987.2 prices had sky rocketed and it was out of my price range (covid hit my business massively and monthly salaries were a thing of the past so that didn't help either!). I got rid of the Merc for what it cost me and 'downgraded' to a 987.1 Boxster. It's a reasonable car but not bombproof like the 987.2 is.

Be careful for what you wish for. You may regret it as much as I did.

Probably 15% of net premium (IPT is 12%), but dangerous getting into percentages. It’s less than 80p a week increase and I am happy with that!

To be fair I do love my 987 but the wife is fed up with the dog being on her lap every day! If I could afford a 981 and a cheap runabout that could work but I don’t think i can justify that for 5000 miles a year!

That’s annoying! Mine stayed put around £600 which isn’t that great now I think about it.

For reference I’m getting £1200 for a 2017 m240i or an Audi R8 and £1800 for an M4.

I think part of your issue may be that you're looking for a sort of car that would be very practical for robbing a bank, and thus the insurers are pricing in the risk that it may be 'borrowed' for that purpose.

Yep, too many of those cars have keyless entry and are a target for theft.

Have you considered a Lotus Evora (or indeed a 911) to put the dog on the back seats? Being old school and having a physical key will make a difference to insurance!

Maybe look at the slightly leftfield options & see what numbers they come back with.

I think you're over stating the effect of keyless entry a tad. My McLaren was keyless, always parked on a driveway, no tracker and was about £700 a year.

There are many things that seem to bump insurance up but the idea that cars are very expensive to insure because they're keyless and physical keys automatically makes it cheaper is a bit simplistic.

All those cars are much more nickable than a 987 Cayman, for reasons already given. And living in London will mean that fast 4-seaters are a target for people who do nefarious stuff with their mates.

Insurance isn't universally going up. Mrs 2Btoo has just renewed the insurance on her Fabia. Different situation entirely I know but it's down 15% from last year AND has me on as a named driver with a few points (which prevented me from being on it last year.)

Some nice options there. Funnily enough the 440i Msport is coming back with normal numbers. That could work, just a bit of a shame it’s not an M4!
