Yes, seen some of these occasionally.
Is it another 'american' thing that has come to us ?
I don't think we need them on the M25, but in other places it can be useful.

A few around here, Laundromat / revolution laundry at a local petrol station

Cost £10 to wash a big garden furniture cover that was grimey. Also used to wash a quilt. Cheaper than launderette around here!

https://www.revolution-laundry.com/en-uk/

Pretty cool how it texts 10 mins before it finished, so pop down to collect.

Very common in France, where there are lots of motorhomers/caravanners/campers. Also useful for duvets/large loads for residents. Most supermarket car parks have one.

My local Morrisons has a laundrette unit in the car park.

Noticed them at cobham services, assumed it was for long haul truckers.

TBH I would have had the same thought. I've never been on my way back from a holiday or business trip and decided to stop halfway to do laundry. But who DOES stop at motorway services, often away from their home for weeks at a time? Lorry drivers.

I'd have put it in the same category as showers at services; short of having some sort of code brown disaster is there any reason for a non-trucky to take a shower at the services?

Maybe if they have EV charging too you could plug it in and do your washing rather than sitting around twiddling your thumbs? F..knows.

I have seen a few of these recently. TBH they make more sense to me in a supermarket car park, for washing large items while you shop.

A motorway services is an odd place to do the laundry.

Re the machines texting before they finish, my student daughter tells me that is fairly standard for launderettes these days. Handy.

If it had been a thing in my day I would have spent even more time in the pub;)

Seems very odd. By the time your washing is dried you'll have racked up one hell of a parking fine.

Recharge your washing machine while using a washing machine.

Has a nice symmetry to it.

As Doofus said, very common in French supermarket car parks. Sometimes you'll stop for fromage and a coffee at the supermarket and think why not?

You have a near instant load of fresh holiday clothing that you don't have to wash at home and the machines are larger and it's one load rather than several. Whenever we go on holiday we try to wash our stuff before we come home. The best ones are the Chinese laundries in America where they charge you by weight - they have large fruit and veg type scales to weigh beforehand. Absolutely everything is washed and ironed, even each sock is pressed.

I've noticed them popping up here and there for years but I don't think I've ever seen one being used. Obviously I'm sure they are, that's just my experience.

Strikes me they'd be handy for large items that our washing machine wouldn't be big enough for like duvets. But I can't really imagine driving to a service station to do that at the same time. Local laundrettes and dry cleaners are fewer and farther between in my experience these days. Maybe the forecourts are replacing that business.

If someone were to brake suddenly in front of you, they could be useful I suppose.

There's one outside our local supermarket in France. After the great COVID shutdown and we hadn't been to the cottage for 18 months, we toddled down and ran all the bedding through the big machine. Result!

Yes, we used to use the one at our local Intermarche for work gear that we didn't want to mess up our machine at home, also, as said, for large stuff that we wanted washed and dried. Very good machines and cheap to use too.

Get that, but why motorway services? Would make more sense to put them in supermarkets, to use up the floor space they say they don't need anymore because of online. Coffee shops, Argos, Launderette. Why not?

There is one at a small petrol station near us. Alongside Amazon lockers. Clearly looking to monetise the forecourt.

I am not sure how much overlap there is between petrol sales and laundrette services, though.
