Hi all,

This is probably a stupid question...

But anyway. The oil on the Griff needs to be changed every 6000 miles, yes? I was going to change it every 3000 to be on the safe side - but the latest oil has been in since June and done 1600 miles.

So - should I be thinking of changing it now, given that it's been in there a while, or am I being Ms Paranoid once again??

Edited to add: Don't answer that last question.

I usually get the oil changed every 4 months in all the cars. But it's easy to drop the oil out of the others and put new stuff in. I gather it's not quite so simple in the Griff...

Thanks Rich!

Depends on oil type mineral should be changed more often normally 3,000 miles, synthetic will last up to twice as long, also depends on type of driving ie a short stop/ start journey will discolour & contaminate oil more than cruising / long trips.

Tim gets my vote. Leave it for a bit longer yet, especially if it is synthetic.

SGirl...This was also playing on my mind...it wasnt so much the changing of oil..more the pressure that could be lost in the process...

apache....regarding your servicing at Offords...do you get Simon/Luigis team to change it or do you DIY?...(cost?)

I let them do it, there are pump priming hazards that I don't want to get involved in 60 squid inc oil

I know I've found this thread a bit late, but I'll add my bit anyway, for what it's worth.

Most important thing on the Griff (& other TVR/Rover V8 cars for that matter) regarding oil, besides change intervals, is to make sure there's plenty of oil in the engine, but never to overfill.

Depending on the engine/age/mileage/use, the oil will dissappear at anything from half to one litre, per 1k miles, and since the sump only holds a handfull of litres, that can leave it dangeraously low after 6k miles. I guess if you're driving hard (on a track of course) the oil will slosh around in the sump and when low, you may risk a drop in pressure.

Never overfill, otherwise you'll be in severe danger of pressurising the crank case and blowing something - usually the sump seal, at the end nearest the clutch - and casuing an oil leak.

If you knew that already, I hope I don't sound pedantic, but it is pretty vital stuff.

Yeah, and losing oil pressure is a right pain in the ae believe me - to get it back if you want to be safe involves taking oil pump off priming it then taking dizzy off and driving the pump until you get some pressure - bugger!

Peanuts, IMHO. The schedule is 6,000 miles OR once a year, whichever comes sooner. Why are you worrying?

'Cos I like worrying. If I don't worry about the oil, I'll worry about something else.

Oh, and because I was thinking of putting the car in for some other work and I was wondering whether to get the oil done at the same time.

See if they'll chuck an oil change in for free!! Ask for it like you would ask for extra mayo at KFC - after you've paid for it..

Fair point, hadn't thought of that. Other good things to worry about are battery condition, fit of windows to roof, stonechips, scuffed alloys, pebbledashing behind the rear wheels, delaminating windscreens, scratched rear screens...

You have bought wisely!

I'm with SIMPO. Change the oil and filter every 6K. It won't hurt the engine if you change it more frequently, it's just a waste of money, So start worrying about wasting money and youv'e cracked it.
