Hey guys

I’m in the market for an M2 moving from an Abarth.

I’m wondering what ownership costs are like in reality, looking at a 2017 car, non comp, and I do around 5k miles a year max.

I’ve heard services are pretty costly? But is that just main dealer vs a specialist place? Anything else to be aware of?

Cheers!

Don't buy an M2 if you think you might have problems maintaining it correctly. That would be my advice. cutting corners with maintenance is only going to be more expensive down the road.

You have made the right choice going for the OGM2 if running costs are a concern as pre-LCI it shouldn't be the £500 tax racket and the MPG is better. I have just bought a Comp and the MPG is shocking, the tax is a joke and tires are very expensive but I am absolutely loving it. It's not a car to be frugal with but you're a long time dead, enjoy it.

Sorry that wasn’t the question or the intent, it’s just about knowing what the costs are, not trying to dodge them…just doing my due diligence

I put a random 2020 M2 into my local BMW dealer service portal to check the servicing costs.

Prices returned were:
Engine oil service with micro filter £210
Engine oil service with microfilter, air filter & spark plugs £787

They also add £30 to each for “standard scope and environmental disposal charges”

Independent specialists will of course be cheaper, it depends if you want the main dealer servicing for resale value.

How do the running costs compare to a M240i? I absolutely love the M2... dream car for me, but I would seriously consider the M240i has such a good deal in comparison.

Having both i would say there's very little difference in the running costs....

Not been funny but if you are looking at buying a M2 then the running costs are going to be high. It is a performance BMW, so it's not going to be cheap. You need to put the money in to maintain the car and if you can't afford to do that then buy something else or keep the Abarth. If you really need a bigger car but don't want to spend the money on decent maintenance then buy a Toyota or Honda. They will keep going on half decent parts.

I don't think the OP is suggesting they're going to have any problems maintaining the car to a good standard, they're simply asking for an idea on costs so they can go into it with their eyes open - seems perfectly sensible to me.

Seems to be a bit of a 'if you have to ask, you can't afford it' attitude here, which is nonsense.

Granted that they want to know a rough cost but you can make it as expensive or as cheap as you want to. You could take it to BMW and service the car every 4000 miles or you could take it to a BMW specialist that might be cheaper. Also depends on what you can and can't do yourself. If you're able to change the oil yourself then that will save you money.

Thanks for the feedback guys, circa 250 minor and 800 major at a dealer for service? And I’ve read tyres are circa £500 a rear set too?

And yeah to the people giving lectures in affording things, I can easily afford this car or more expensive, the abarth was a Covid run around…but part of being able to afford things is know what their costs are…ignorance doesn’t equal wealth

I’m benchmarking it against a Tesla model 3 is why I want some granularity on cost

Tyres can be expensive, however if you shop around and are flexible on the brand they aren't too bad. I recently got a set of 4 Continental Sport Contact 7's for less than £750. Comp Main dealer servicing is around £350 for a minor and £900 for a major- excluding brakes (about 18k or 2 years between each).

Think about the insurance cost too(if you haven't already?). I have a F82 M4 and that is quite expensive on insurance for example.

Yeah already ran it and it’s £600ish, double the abarth

Cheers that’s fine, it seems that servicing of anything from a m140 up to the m2 comp is around the same prices!

That mirrors me too! thumbup

The M4 is £600ish as well, and that is double what I was paying on the F56 Cooper S that I had before it. smile

Yep that all sounds about right. It's also around £180 for a straight oil change from a specialist

I do prefer the looks of the m4, but everyone says the m2 is the one to go for, what led you to the m4?

I've always wanted one ever since they came out back in 2014. I had an E92 M3 that I didn't really gel with, and I wasn't fond of the max power at 8300rpm and the lack of guts lower down the revs(the torque to weight ratio). Plus the brakes didn't cope all that well with the 1650kg weight for me either.

Whereas basically the M4 puts right all of the M3's wrongs in comparison for me(better brakes/much more torque etc).

The M2 is definitely the one to have from what I read as you say. I think the smaller size of the M2 makes it feel more of a drivers car(the M4 is a big car even though the M2 weighs pretty much the same).

Nickfrog(Nick) on here took me around Cadwell Park in his OG M2, and the car(and his driving skills) seriously Impressed me. It was great to experience an M car doing its stuff on a track for sure. cool
