As it used to be, so many launches seemed to be in a snowy pit Lane at Silverstone.

The Arrows FA/1 in January 1978 (the car otherwise being known as a Shadow DN9)…

I wasn't too worried when Alpha Tauri announced that they were doing a livery launch because it was in New York suggesting it was clearly a marketing driven exercise.

Williams however announcing a livery launch barely two weeks before the only preseason test makes me nervous. Their recent track record of being ready for testing has been poor and they've also just lost their Technical Director and Team Manager.

Safe bet the Mercedes won't look like it's been too close to the heat lamp this year.

I wonder if there will be any big surprises in car design this season? I'm always tempted to say no these days as the limits of design are so stringent - although I would have said the same the year Mercedes rocked up with DAS, that one was particularly interesting because I think it went unnoticed for a the first couple of days of testing until those with truly beady eyes started to point.

I do think that with a few different takes on maximising the new ground effect availability last season, some teams probably went in slightly the wrong direction and were unable to make any real updates to address that in season - so those cars could look very different this time round. Speaking of Merc again, perhaps this years car won't like a limpet that's been partially crushed?
