That's a great skit on the opening scenes of 2001
It's way more than a mere skit:

Watched the film last night, entirely not what I was expecting which is a bit of a shame.
I was hoping for a light hearted tongue in cheek comedy set in barbieland, and instead got an existential crisis and a deep look at matriarchy vs patriarchy.
I watched a YouTube video from the Critical Drinker yesterdayand this is exactly what he said. The marketing team have been very clever in making everyone think this is going to be a Barbie comedy, but like you say it is just another vehicle to push the message.I was hoping for a light hearted tongue in cheek comedy set in barbieland, and instead got an existential crisis and a deep look at matriarchy vs patriarchy.
I suspect a lot of people will rush to see it this weekend and he very disappointed that it is nothing like they thought it would be.
Once the truth gets out I suspect the box office for this film will drop off a cliff.
Let me guess; a thrilling 2 hour lecture on the subject of feminism in the 21st century, how all men are thick, useless bar stewards and modern women are strong & independent and simply fabulous at absolutely everything. No thanks, I can just watch any three minute prime time tv ad break and get the same message rammed down my throat but it’ll be free and over much quicker.
Credit where it’s due what I’ve seen of the film sets they’ve built they look superb. Unfortunately a total waste of effort though.
My missus did express an interest in going to see this bilge but luckily there’s a new Mission Impossible film out too. We don’t go to the cinema often so that will do us and Barbie can fck off.

Barbie has a lot of pink, and most of the audience were dressed and equipped with drinks to match. Yes it’s partly a corporate ad and a cash grab, yes it is maybe a bit too didactic. But it has fantastic visuals, great acting, and two fabulous dance numbers. Gerwig keeps impressing.
(fi you saw her Little Woman and Lady Bird, you'll know what to expect - these are very high quality chick flicks)

I watched this last night in a packed cinema, men were outnumbered at least 10-1. I get the feeling that men are not the target for this film.
It was exactly what I expected - a very well made, fun, entertaining and thoughful movie. Fundamentally it was a role-reversal movie, with the traditional Hollywood roles gender swapped. The dumb-bimbo role was taken by Ken, and the go-getting protaganist role taken by a host of Barbies.
There was a lot of interesting themes raised in the film, not just about feminism, but the difficulties men face in attempting to cope in an increasingly less patriarchal society. Kens discovery of horses and pick-up trucks is a delight to watch. All the girly-pinkness builds up to a particularly powerful monologue towards the end of the film, which summarises what it's like to be a woman in todays society and will probably get whoops of approval in some cinemas.
I fully expect this film to be attacked by the usual suspects as they fail to see the irony in the gender roles being reversed in such an unsubtle gloves off way.

This review explains it from a slightly different angle -- https://theconversation.com/greta-gerwigs-barbie-m...
I’ve got an ear worm from the constant trailers being shown on a certain TV channel.
( “This channel is sponsored by Barbie” every ad break.)

NB: Wonder if the timing has anything to with the start of the Women’s World Cup... or is just purely coincidental.
