Advice needed - £5-7k for a reliable 3l diesel?

Hi all,
Need to buy a car for daily duties, doesn't need to be an estate or saloon, but ideally I'd like something with a bit of power which isn't going to bleed my dry if/when it goes wrong.
Current list that I've looked at; CLS320, Passat CC, E320, 530d, 535d - however, just because they are cheap doesn't mean they are going to be cheap to run, does it?
Is there anything missing from this list that you would add?

Guess it depends on how handy you are with a spanner.
I picked up a E61 535d a couple months back. Had a gearbox service carried out as there were no receipts for that having been done.
Only thing its cost me since then is £100 in parts for 2 thermostats and coolant, changed them myself.
Am i expecting other bits to need replacing, yes - its done 123000miles so expect it. The money i’m saving from not paying monthlies on the car i had with more than cover any bits that need doing.

What annual mileage are you doing?
Our family runabout is about to die a death and we're in for a replacement on a similar budget, but I'm specifically avoiding diesels because I fear anything in that bracket has got expensive DPF/DMF/EGR issues just waiting to drop on me, so I'm looking at petrol only.

W212 E350 CDI here, bought at 78k IIRC now on 111k.
Been utterly brilliant - to the point where I think its the 'best' car I've ever had (of about 24) even if its nowhere near the most exicting or flashiest or fun or whatever.
Its huge, comfortable, quick, looks decent, has enough modern tech to get by without being too complex or chintzy like a new Merc. Brilliant lights. 17inch wheels so tyres are cheap. 7 speed gearbox (big improvement over older Merc). Self-levelling suspension means it drives the same empty as it doesn when used like a builders van.
Mines an Estate, Saloons much better value if you have no need for one.
Its the only Diesel car I've ever bought but its had zero DPF issues, and doesnt have Ad-blue. Disconting AMG's, the 6 cylinder Diesel is the 'right' engine for an E-Class. Been very reliable, needed a thermostat (slow to close, no harm done) and a sensor, both fixed on the drive with Genuine parts for less than 150quid all in for both. Brakes and service parts etc all reasonable priced for Genuine Merc from Syntner Newcastle, alternate A and B every 8k or so.
Cannot reccomend more for someone who perhaps has something else that does 'excitement' but wants the best car at just being there to transport you.
On a cold wet dark motorway commute its like an old armchair. I love it.

As an alternate I'd recommend the 3.0d Infiniti M but they're hard to find but you will get a nice low mileage one, plus they're ULEZ/CAZ compliant:
