F40 1 Series tyre question
Discussion
HI all,
Got an F40 118i as a daily. The OEM tyre it arrived on is a BS Turanza T005. (It is an M Sport so on 18's)
Coming up to 20K miles and whilst the tyres do have some life left on them, I am starting to think about replacements.
Obviously this is just a fairly standard car, but I have read that P Zero's really seem to suit the car well. Although not 100% sure if this is on the M135 or just generally.
Also looking at a Michelin PS4 (could also do 5 but not clear on difference other than cost - if they are worth it?)
I don't have a huge problem with the BS tyre, but people feel that Pirelli is quieter, more comfortable and handles better, which seems like the holy grail.
How do the P zeros's vs Michelin PS fair for cooking model cars, or should I just get different tyres? I don't have a huge problem with the BS, but as they are also quite pricey if I can improve comfort, road noise and get better handling for not much more then I will.
Thanks!

Try Goodyear EfficientGrip. I replaced my Pirellis with those, when I went from 19” to 18” rim diameter. Quieter, and more comfortable, and don’t feel like run-flats. This is on a 335d xdrive, They are down to 5.5mm (from 8mm) after 15,000 miles. So I should get 30,000 miles before they get to 3mm. The 19” Pirellis lasted to 32,000 miles, before I replaced them, and they were down to about 3mm
Heck, I even drove over the Derbyshire hills with these in minus 2 degrees! (My PH badge is being returned in the post, as I SHOULD have winter tyres!).

I think you’d be wasting your time on a UHP tyre like the MP4’s . … better off getting a decent midrange tyre with a longer lasting compound for half the price
They are quite soft and as such don’t last very long
I found the PS4 to wear well. The ones on my 130i certainly were well. Even the Super Sports on my M140i actually wore well and lasted ages (difference there was that they didn’t work very well once about half worn). They are quite soft and as such don’t last very long
I’ve been pleased with they Good Year Asymmetric 5/6’s fitted to our current cars and they’re often a good chunk cheaper than Michelin.

Friends with the PS4 have been replacing the rears at 6-8K
The best tyres I think I’ve had I’m currently running they are Goodyear Vector 4seasons on the Mini .. they are truly ace in all weathers and seem to be lasting forever .. really impressive all round all year tyre
I've had PS4s on my E82 since they were first launched 5 or 6 years ago, and have no issues with them wearing out quickly in the slightest. Rears are usually good for 20-25k, and the fronts on mine currently are about 40k old and still have plenty of life left. The bit I really like about them is the performance doesn't really drop off in the same way as the tyres get worn out - I usually taken them down to 2mm or so with no real traction issues.
The Pilot Super Sports do drop off, and I only got about 15k out of a set of those, so I'd recommend the 4s for longer life and better grip in inclement weather.
I've recently put some PS5s on the rear - biggest difference to the 4s are noise levels, the 5s are far quieter on motorways etc.

The P Zero is an absolute POS tyre. It's not even in the same league as the PS4. The kind of people that rate that god awful tyre are the same kind of people who advise you to sacrifice grip and performance over cost.Got an F40 118i as a daily. I’m running Falken FK520’s on my Z4 and at fraction or the price of the Michelin’s the rears I got 12k from and the fronts are at 16k and still 4mm+

I’ve used Falkens and Kumho before and they’re pretty good, but personally I’ve found them to wear faster than the likes of PS4’s. I did 12k in my my 130i and the PS4’s had a good 4mm of tread left.Friends with the PS4 have been replacing the rears at 6-8K

Price wise, Kumho’s for my other half’s 125i were really expensive this time around. A pair of Asymmetric 5’s were only £20 more for a pair.
Thanks for all the advice and comments!
I suppose my core thought is, is the Pilot Sport 4/5 overkill for the car given it is only a 118i. (note it is the straight pilot sport not the S or super sport etc.)
I think it is probably a step up from the Turanza - I believe the Potenza would be the equivalent BS tyre.
The money is less of a consideration if the consensus is I can make the car quieter, more comfortable and handle better for not much more.
If not, then I obviously don't want to waste money, but the Bridgestone tyres do have a bad rap as the OEM tyre.
For reference the Turanza would be about £100 a corner fitted whereas the PS4 would be about £120 a corner. So obviously more money but if it is worth it then all good.
The recommendations for Goodyear are noted and the Eagle F1 Asymetric 5 is about £110 a corner and the Efficient Grip £95.
Uniroyals and Falkens are all north of £90 as well, at which point I would go for at least the Efficient grip.
All prices from black circles just as a point of reference - any advice on where to buy tyres also welcome.
Thanks!
