I had decided that my next vehicle would hopefully be one that might gain value rather than lose it .
Have had Volvo 5 pots in the past I started to occasionally look for one . Preferably one that hadn't been messed about too much .
After missing out on several and being really messed about on an S70 T5.
I found this .
It's got some good history and had the important stuff done . Rebuilt turbo ,OEM exhaust, uprated front brakes ,new rear disks and shocks ,decent tyres with only 2k on them .
Eligible for classic insurance and I am also eligible for 50% discount on VED .

I had an R version for a few weeks and didn't like it at all. The standard car may be a better balance, i.e. suspension and tyres not made from concrete.

Yes they don't really suit rubber band tyres , super stiff suspension and tyre shredding power .
I shall do only mild upgrades if at all .

Just realised I was watching this on eBay! Think you got it for a good price.

I'd probably remove the tints, wind deflectors and yellow moose sticker, but it looks a great base.

Also, how do you get 50% discount on VED?

I get the discount because of disability, I can apply for 50 % discount because of a mobility allowance. If I had the higher rate allowance I would get free VED .
Yes it was on eBay and it was a good price (under my spend limit )

Most only have a vague understanding about the mobility scheme and not the alternatives. Even if I had the higher rate allowance that would entitle me to a shiny new car I wouldn't bother.

Very nice. They’re really getting rare now. You’ve done well there. bandit

I have a manual non turbo V70 and a manual T5. I bought the T5 a year and a half ago and still haven’t done anything with it but the goal is to get on the road for the spring.

I’m busy stealing the R parts off my non-Turbo one below.

I agree with the comment about losing the Moose sticker. I bloody hate all that. Same for the wind deflectors.
The tints are a bit of a harder decision. My T5 is similar to yours re the tints.
I always think “council” when I see tints on nice old cars hehe but they are good for hiding your luggage (of which mine is often expensive bikes) and they keep the boot a bit cooler for my dogs.

So I think I’ll leave mine initially.
I’d love an 850 but none ever come up when I’m looking.
Here’s the T5 as I bought it.

I look forward to watching your progress. thumbup

PS. I’m sure you’ve seen this thread from a while ago but the lad put a lot of work into this one. Lots of info on there.

Looks good op other than the moose sticker (I’ve never quite got them).

I have a massive soft spot for these and 850’s in general.

I'm in two minds about the stickers ,they can stay until I give the car a good valet when the weather is better.
The wind deflectors are handy if you like fresh air but not the draught.
The tints are certainly practical for security especially as it doesn't have a load cover at the moment .
It does have the seven seat option in the boot which will probably be removed as I would rather have the space for storage .
As these have gained value the cost of second hand parts have rocketed , hopefully joining forums should help to locate the correct bits at reasonable prices.
I am going to have a chat with my local MOT tester about fitting a different steering wheel without airbag ,some allow it ,others fail it automatically.
There is a crease on the n/s wing that a dent man should be able to sort ,to give him a fighting chance I shall leave that until the weather is much warmer. A couple of bubbly areas on the drivers door that my local body shop can sort .
It has a nasty split on the drivers seat which spoils the look of the interior. The leather needs a good clean and some balm treatment.
I shall be fitting a more modern radio system with usb , Bluetooth and hands free . There is a CD multichanger in the boot but the cartridge is missing and I have never bought a second hand car with one that works so that will probably be removed as the cubbyhole is handy for storage.
It's not intended to be a concourse car or a modified monster ,just a comfortable and quick car for me to shows and Motorsport and at least hold its value without costing a fortune .

I like your plans. I’m the same now regarding making something nice and clean and useable but not OTT.

I keep my best car in mint condition but I’ve a couple of others such as my Volvos and 205 GTi that I’ll keep clean and nice for their age, but not obsess over. When you make them mint you just have to either not use them, or watch them deteriorate again. Not fun.

First job done !
Cleaned the facia up a bit and purchased a conversion lead and bingo all working !
One of my early jobs ( mid 70s) was a car radio installer , nothing like the modern systems! Very little was pre wired in those days .

I've had a few 'proper' T-5 powered models over the years, including several R's and whilst they're the halo models and have a certain kudos, I actually preferred the standard cars be it 850 or V70 but when I sold my last rather abused V70 T-5 a year or so back, I figured that'd be it as nice examples were getting scarce.

Then a white, manual 850 estate appeared... pretty much my unicorn car and pretty much non existent more so in non-police spec and so that was that. It's barely turned a wheel since and whilst it's pretty good, like you I have a fairly long list of things to do although I want to leave it totally standard aside for it being slightly lower.

They are a tricky one as they'll never be worth a fortune and not worth what R models fetch but that's not the point. I bought mine with the theory it'd be a cool retro toy, I have a company van so usage is low however it's now on that slippery slope where I want to get it as nice as I can, but then I'll be one a proper tart and not want to drive it when it's wet or whatever and that defeats the purpose... but, it's all pretty much irreplaceable now...

Be interesting to see how you get on and if I can help with exchanging advice / tales of woe / random parts made of unobtainium then happy to do so. Sadly the days when these were plentiful in breakers are long gone and the reality of how hard some parts are to source has sunk in. All part of the fun though and probably why mine hasn't really gone far in the past 6 months!

Found a load cover from a Volvo group on Facebook via the marketplace at about 50% of the prices of others or breakers .
Found a replacement black grill from Autodoc in Germany.
Also found a strut brace from JP Cages / Ultra Racing . Again much cheaper than many were selling for via club sites and forums .
Just need a bit of decent weather and my health to remain stable . Chest infection with heart problems and yucky cold weather is not a good combination.

Good luck getting the bits fitted! I hoping for some good weather too. Crawling round on the driveway in the cold is not fun...

We had a silver 850 estate when the kids were little, was a fantastic car for that time, suited the family brief and the 850 T5 was very desiable due to being a bit funkier than the average Volvo and the touring car version helped as well.

Still miss it, sold it to an enthusiast and it was pristine, it turned up on eBay, still pristine like five years later, did a check a while back and its dead now, really thought that one would survive, weird to think if it had it would be nearly 30 years old now !

As for yours coming on tyres that had only done 2000 miles, in my experience that means the front would be about 50 percent worn biggrin

Never had a car that so readily and violently broke traction, wet or dry given half a chance, even my Fiesta ST which is now quite a bit more powerful doesnt do it.

I had a smoke grey S70 T5 auto that had been modded , in sport mode with tracks turned off would go through the gears spinning up to top on a damp road but only moving about 30 MTRS .
