Saw the shortlisted nominees today.

Not the star studded list you'd expect.

What should they be doing that they are not? Find some world champions/gold medal winners from somewhere?

Who would you expect? Maybe Bobby Charlton, Jackie Stewart, Steve Redgrave?
Who are the "stars" in your opinion?

Doesn't scream we've had a Stella sporting year, if a player from a very niche sport like curling is nominated.

Maybe I shouldn't have set the bar too high though.

Its changed so much over the years. It used to be THE sports personality........etc. Now its the BBC's SPOTY. THEY decide who the nominations are etc, NOT the UK public. Take young Mathew Fitzpatrick as an example. Not even shortlisted.

Good point and reinforces my previous comment. How often could you have watched Matt Fitzpatrick live on BBC TV this year?

I did wonder that as well. As the US Open was shown on ....Sky? Maybe that doesnt meet the bbc's criteria?

When this programme started, the BBC was the main portal for watching sport on TV in the UK. ITV had the balance.

For the past 30 plus years, BBC sport content has been massively eroded as sports governing bodies sold the broadcast rights to higher and higher bidders.

Having said that, the award ceremony covers people and teams who have excelled in sport, irrespective as to what platform the sport can be watched on.
