Hi Pistonheads collective, I’ve got a new M240i XDrive on order, who knows how long I’ve got to wait, could be 3-12 month wait, I have no idea at the moment as only just ordered it.

I’ve sold my current car so looking for a stop gap that I won’t lose much money on during this period. I’ve alway felt golfs were a reasonably safe bet.

Perhaps something like this:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202212192...

I only do around 5k per annum and don’t use it for commuting. Only issue is it doesn’t, have apple car play and the boot might be a little small as I do sometimes lug some football training gear around.

Are these good cars, any known issues or concerns with a manual box in a diesel.

Eldest child has had one of these for a year or so and we've had no issues with it. It's reasonably engaging to drive as well. Manual diesel Golf boxes are traditionally bombproof. That one looks a tad expensive, though - we paid a bit under 8K for ours which would then have been about the same age as this one is now.

Edit: are you sure that doesn't have Apple car play? That infotainment system looks the same as the one on the Passat I used to have, which did have it.

Cheers, I does look a bit on the expensive side, but there are a few others, pretty sure Car play was only introduced from 2016+

How big are your feet if a golf might be too small for football gear?

Not a bad shout.

I really like this one, looks to be in really good condition but is a diesel. It’s got the Dynaudio speakers too

I agree German stuff tends to hold its money, and VW Golfs are percevied as being solid and reliable so hold their value pretty well. Since this is a ULEZ compliant diesel it shouldn't lose much money.

You are also correct that at that kind of mileage the clutch and DMF could be nearing the end of their lives, so could be a risk. Would cost at least £700 to replace at an independent specialist. It might not like the low mileage you cover too, with regards to the DPF, etc, though this will be mitigated by you only having it for 6 months or so.

With that in mind, the 1.4 TSI petrol model might be a better bet as suggested.

edit: this BMW 118i could also be worth a look?

Octavia VRS would be better value then GTD
Same running gear.

If its only 6 months, have you considered a convertible of some sort?
Will be summer and in demand by the time you have to sell, thus lose least amount of money, maybe even make some

Thanks, I think I’ll look at petrol models. The BMW looks ok but something wrong with that steering wheel. Think it’s been poorly wrapped. Any more suggestions?

Cheers, I’ll look at the Octavia VRS, can’t really look at a drop top as I need good boot space

Should be ok at 81k. My MK6 is on 127k and original clutch/DMF, no DPF issues.

My in-laws had a similar 2015 Mk7 Golf 2.0 TDI GT that I was fond of.

Beware that these might not be ULEZ-compliant despite what Autotrader says - theirs definitely wasn't (it was Euro 5), but AT's tool said it was. Their trade-in was about £7k with some cosmetic attention needed last year.

Autotrader have stopped listing vehicles as being ULEZ or not now and removed the search feature, presumably someone has sued them for doing what you described above.

Presumably Autotrader used the 1 September 2015 date for registration (i.e. 65 plate) but that wasn't always the case depending on when they were built (i.e. there were some 15 plate cars that were Euro 6, and some 65 plate ones that were Euro 5).

Indeed, the 15 plate one that the OP posted at the top of this thread is compliant according to the ULEZ checker.

I'd go for something a little more special that will hold money better.
