Car owner has died and spouse left car in will - no V5
Discussion
Apologies if this is the wrong area to post this in.
A friend of ours has died and she has left her car to her husband. He is in his 70's and hasn't got a clue how to sort anything so we are helping out.
The car has finance outstanding but there is around £2k equity in the car. The finance is in the name of the deceased and we think the car is registered in her name.
So that the car can be sold - will likely use We Buy Any Car or similar - does the V5 need to be changed in to the husband's name? If so, how do we go about this?
Also, will there be a paper V5? Car is around 6 years old - always had lease or company cars myself so never had to deal with any ownership paperwork.
Appreciate any help here.

I’m not 100% sure but i think wbac will want a V5 in someones name, if they’re deceased then death certificate also required.

.
If the deceased lady was also the insurance policyholder then he needs to check their stance on allowing him (or anyone else covered) to drive. I've read some insurers seem fine to carry on but when a neighbour of ours died, his wife called their insurer and they wouldn't allow the policy to continue. She had to get a garage to collect the car..
Having said that, I bet many people don't even think about it and just carry on and only tell the insurer at renewal.

We've told him to have a good look for the V5 as otherwise he can't sell straightaway.
May be a daft question but would they have a paper V5 if the car was financed? It's on HP.
On our last few leases, we haven't had a paper V5?
Yes there will be. HP is the finance product to allow the person to buy the car and be the owner. A lease is not the same. We've told him to have a good look for the V5 as otherwise he can't sell straightaway.

If the V5 can't be found, apply for the V5 via a V62 form.
Wbac however are owned by BCA and offer online valuations based on a computer algorithm , mileage year two keys, at least 6months mot and no damage. The valuation will get you at their premises then reality sets in. They will look for any cosmetic/ mechanical/ history issues and in some cases knock their original valuation to well below trade value.
It may well be better to pay off any finance and sell the car privately...

Whilst this is good advice for most scenarios of selling a car, I don’t think this is applicable to the OP situation at all.Wbac however are owned by BCA and offer online valuations based on a computer algorithm , mileage year two keys, at least 6months mot and no damage. I told them about true condition of vehicle etc & they offered me more when they saw it than they did online.
