Repairing Navigation screen that will not open

2007 Vantage. My navigation unit will not rotate open. It moves a bit, struggles and then returns to the closed position.

Diving into this project I found the reasons were somewhat complex and varied.

I know this is an issue for some owners, so I thought I would post this process the moment I was finished with fixing it.
