Hi Fellows.

Apologies if its a repetiative thread, The car manual says API SM, SN (ACEA A5/B5) 0w20, 5w30. Now a days its hard to find A5/B5 oil so question is can a c3/c4 oil be used instead of A5/B5. Will there be any damage in long run ?

Would appreciate expert opinions.

Thanks.

Thank you, yes online there are options but garages near me never had them. They usually have c3 or c4 oils. I know I can order online and take it with me, but I was also wondering can I simply go ahead and use C3, are there any adverse effects ?

Probably help a little if you said for which car the oil is for. The C rating is for catalyst and DPF compatibility - more typically relevant on diesel engines, so doesn't really tell you all that much about an oil's suitability for the engine in question on its own.

Does this guide help you? https://www.valvoline.com/en-eur/understanding-oil...

Apologies, I should have mentioned that it, the car is Honda Jazz 1.3 2018 MK3. I have done some reasearch online but got more confused. There are different opinions, many says its perfectly fine while other says only A5/B5.

I think you're still getting hung up on the C rating which isn't really relevant to your petrol-engined car. Honda's own oil is 0W20 viscosity, and if you put your vehicle into a few of the oil selectors available online, including the one on the Opie Oils site linked above, they come back typically with 0w20 oils with A5 ratings, amongst other approvals.

What are the other specifications of the oils available locally - viscosities API certifications etc? Are you planning to change the oil, or does it, surprisingly for a Honda, need a top-up? Honda themselves do an oil-change service kit, for example.

Thank you for response. I need an oil change and local garages have API SN C3 or API SN C4 of Ravenol, Granville and Mannol. They said they don't use A5/B5 anymore as its old specs now and C3/C4 is actually better than A5/B5, c

and they still charge almost similar even If I take my own oil that's why I was wondering would a C3 be fine in car which require A5,

We seem to be going round in circles. You keep asking whether C3 will be OK in a car where something else is specified.

From what you've said of your local garages, it sounds like they have got the cheapest bulk oil they can find that they put in everything that comes in for an oil change that will probably be OK for most of them.

I repeat - C3 is largely an irrelevant specification for your car as it's not diesel. For example, Castrol make a 5W40 C3 oil which nominally meets the specs for your car in that it's API SN, but if we go by Honda's guidance of 0w20, it's much too thick. They also make a C3 oil which is only to SL spec, rather than the SN spec your car requires.

So to answer your question directly - will a C3 oil be OK where an API SN ACEA A5 oil is specified, the answer is maybe, but maybe not. C3 is not enough specification all by itself to give a definitive answer. It's not the specification that Honda have stipulated.

If it's 0W20 C3 but it's also to API SN spec or better then it's fine, and if we go by your car's manual rather than the latest guidance, then 5w30 C3 should also be fine if it meets API SN too.

Thank you for eudacting me, it really helps. I think anything matching API SN should be fine, because it specifies API SM or SN or ACEA A5/B5. Plus its a Japnese engine, it won't bother much.

Cheers!!! & Happy new year smile
