Insurance when px’ing car

PH hive mind - will of course be speaking with insurance company but just wondered what the norm is.
Bought a new car yesterday and will be px’ing my wife’s car. What’s the normal approach re. insurance change over? Should I expect the insurance company to cover both cars for that day or do I have to call them when I arrive at the dealers to change the policy over?

Back in the day, insurers used to ask for the time you wanted to changeover
Now, all the insurers I have dealt with (and I change cars often) cover you on both cars on the changeover day so you are covered on the old car up until you swap and the new car from then on
Check with your insurer, of course, but I would be surprised if this is not the case

Isn't the dealer offering a few days free insurance on your new car?
We've just p/x'd an 12 year old Clio for a 3-1/2 year old Fabia at a Skoda dealer. We were offered 5 days free insurance on the Fabia, but didn't use it.
Arranged insurance to change from old to new at 3pm, dropped old car off at 2.40, completed all paperwork & drove off in new car at 3.10.

I’d still check with your own insurer, I’ve tried to get the ‘free’ weeks insurance in the past and the dealer (successfully) tried everything he could think of to avoid doing it. As there’s no such thing as a free lunch, I assume there’s no free insurance either and the dealer pays? It wasn’t great cover either as I recall, can’t remember what brand it was though.
I'm in the trade, all 7 days free insurance is, is an info gathering exercise to sell insurance in the future, you still have to go through the same process and info gathering as any normal insurance to get the 7 days cover; name, DOB, address, accident history, points, reg number etc.
We don't offer it, as it's extra work, grief and pointless....... if it is to be done properly, I wouldn't be surprised if most of these free 7 day covers aren't actually done properly, so therefore you aren't actually insured.
It's literally no hardship to contact your current insurers to say you are collecting a new car with xyz reg on xyz date at xyz time, can you insure me on the new car from then please!

I used the Cuvva site to insure my sons car for the drive home. It was around £10 for up to 2 days. I could then sort the insurance properly at home.
I tried Cuvva again for my wife's new car (again to sort the transfer more easily at home). Quote was again around £10.
Had a problem getting the card payment through though so ended up swapping the old car policy online, using my phone whilst sat in the new car at the dealership. It was easier than I thought in the end.
