Budget £3000, use... Commuting, fishing trips and numerous Liverpool to Scotland runs.
I am handy with a spanner (owned 24 Alfas)
Alfas, Volvos, Fiats I know so happy to buy, RR's make me nervous.
Probably my last chance, who knows what fuel prices and 'zonez' are coming.

Everything I have seen is listed as 3.0

I was in the same boat a year and a half ago, wanting an SUV for a holiday across Europe, as well as fishing trips to France. I really liked the idea of a Range Rover as I'd always fancied one, but in the end I didn't fancy the risk and so bottled it and went for a Lexus.

That said, my budget was a bit bigger, and so if I was looking at £3k I might have chanced it. Might not if it was my last £3k though.

if you're mechanically capable then i would definitely go for it. They are amazing cars.

Back in the 80's/90's (when pretty much all of my family owned Datsuns or Toyotas) one of my uncles used to run Citroen BXs. When i asked him why he didn't get something reliable he said they were dead cheap to buy because of their reputation and quite easy for him to fix (he was an ex mechanic). He was Bangernomics personified.

It is a straight six.

The TD6 badged cars have a straight six as posted above, they are a BMW engine as a legacy form BMW’s ownership of Rover, and development of the car. The V8 4.4 in early cars is also a BMW unit as used in the contemporary X5.

If I was going to own any RR, it would be an early L322 TD6, but it is notorious for rust and failing air suspension…

Td6 Range Rovers have poor gearboxes.

Mine went through 5 during my ownership.

Cracking cars the L322.

Push the budget to a TDV8 3.6, but make sure the turbo's have been replaced!

Ha, I ran a bx in the late 90's, when the drivers door fell off I locked it shut and used the passenger door, then the hydraulics failed coming down a very long hill, didn't have any spanner skills back then.

Having a quick scan on eBay, even the tdv8s are getting to sub 4K now!

I’ve had a TD6 and a TDV8 before, TD6 is a strong, reliable engine but very underpowered for the car, it also has a GM gearbox which do fail quite often but on the plus side aren’t nearly as expensive to get a refurbed one as the ZF one in the TDV8s.

The TDV8 gearbox is stronger but they can have issues too if the oil and filter hasn’t been changed, they also have the potential for turbo failure but they don’t all do it by any means and you can help keep them in good health by checking the pipes aren’t split regularly and having some mechanical sympathy by letting the car idle for a minute or so before switching off if it’s been on boost.

Although more expensive if you can stretch your budget, the 4.4 TDV8 with the 8 speed gearbox is by far the most reliable of the lot.

That’s a very different choice to a Rangie, probably a wise one though to be fair!.
