So since I was diagnosed with depression 14 years ago I have done a thing I call positive January.

Essentially Jan is stest months of the year cold wet post Xmas jolly, bills come in an all that. We'll I decided that no matter what I would put a smile on my face a big st eating grin an be positive. The logic is simple get through 31 days in Jan then Feb is shortest month before you know it March is here an your thinking about spring an summer.

So folks give it a go 31 days is fk all.

I mention this because last night my wife's cousin hung himself leaving behind wife 2 kids and apparently some debt. Nothing is worth that stay positive people 31 days all you need to do.

Certainly could benefit from more positivity on these forums. All the best for Jan and 2023, folks.

That just sounds like you're wishing your life away! Why not go out and do some fun things? Meet friends, go out for lots of drives in your car, go to the autosport show? Better than just counting days and waiting for the summer.

The thing is no one can always be happy and no one should always being sad.

It is being realistic, enjoying being alive and doing what what makes you feel good.

Find a hobby, maybe think about others, maybe just get in your car, pick a random spot on a map drive there. Break up the routines and realise we have one life.

Best way to start the New Year is with a good blast of Van Halen - Unchained.

You haven't got a positive outlook of the start of the year though, you're just burying your head in the sand and wishing away a month.

Sorry to be brutal but it's the truth.

That's not how i read the post, i read it as instead of starting the year off looking at things negatively, why not look at things as a chance to start the year off with a smile on your face

Bring on the happiness smile

Depends though for some owning expensive stuff is positive, but others just see it as shallow, because the money could be used to say help people or such like. That is why positivity is very subjective.

Forums are always likely to be more whine than hey life is great, because getting rid of a moan feels better, it eases the nagging in your mind and it feels good to get things off your chest.

Shouting I love the world doesn't really help you feel better I guess, it might be great for you, but most people I think do not feel the need to tell everyone about it, yet a bit of a moan is a lot easier to get off your chest and as it is a minor bad thing, you feel a little better having shared. Then either been agreed with or taken apart which can either motivate you to argue or wither back behind the rock.

Exactly that I try regardless of weather work etc just to see the positive in everything in Jan.

Example back at the gym, seeing colleagues, a change in routine (work), healthy eating again.

To the chap who felt it was negative apologies it was meant to be look on the bright side an not like my wife's cousin who took his life last night. Jan is hard but it's only 31 days

Ah that's fair enough, I read it wrong. I still can't see what is so hard about January though?

Well it's an interesting one but let me share (I feel sharing experience might help someone not do something so bad). Depression is not feeling sad it's more some highs but lots of lows with no real reason. So you assuming you sent suffer with it will go to work on Tuesday an think hmm bit wet today. With Depression your mind says oh bit wet today and cold an it's not Xmas an I spent to much an the inlaws are awful and work sucks and it will rain all month and I should just end it all.

It's illogical but feels really logical and Jan has a lot of triggers. The post Xmas lull, back at work after an extended break (you might nit like work etc), if like me you work in financial services it's a very busy period straight after a break which is stressful (I actually think year end is bullst but people find it stressful), it can be a long time till your next holiday etc.

All of thoes things can trigger the lows that take over your thoguht process. So I decided when I was very depressed just not to react to Jan BS. I look for positives. For me that's new gym program healthy eating booking next tough mudder refreshing the CV looking at new opportunities etc. I see the hectic activity at work as an opportunity, get my head down plough on with it don't get caught up in the corporate bs in effect use year end as an excuse to nit engage in negativity.

By end of Jan Xmas High is forgotten but your into Feb an should have things planned for the year, lost weight (I always do in q1 and q2 then eat like a pig lol q2 q3).

Jan is an opportunity if you look at the positives

I like the sound of this. Kind of like veganuary or going booze free for a month, but in relation to mental health.

Good luck with it, and thank you for sharing the idea.

That all sounds eminently sensible to me.

I don't want to overstate this but I hate this time of year with the dark mornings and nights and lack of sunshine and find it very difficult to get motivated the same way I do when it's summer and it's nice and light and warm outside.

Sometimes you have to force yourself to get out the house and go for a walk or just to do something when it's far easier to sit in the warmth and do nothing.

Positive things happen to positive people.

This has been my mantra for as long as I can remember as has always served me well. A few weeks ago, someone asked me what I meant by that and at the time I couldn’t articulate it as well as I would have liked to so after giving it serious thought here is what I have come up with.

Be positive, negativity is lazy and easy but being positive takes thought and conscious effort, even if it is a more careful and considerate delivery of a negative result or outcome.

Look for the positives in every situation, they will be there! Failure is a lesson in how not to succeed, a problem is a solution waiting to be found.

Find your successes even in failure! This is a big one, okay so you may not have landed that big sale, but did you deliver a kick ass presentation that they were still impressed with? Yeah you did. Now look for the next few percent that improves it for next time. LEARN THOSE LESSONS!

Be optimistic, if you go through life expecting to find success you will find it. This will take work and effort, do not expect this to mean that there will not be challenges and setbacks to overcome.

Believe in your own capability but be prepared to put the work in to gain that capability.

Be around positive and optimistic people, be the cheerleader for positivity and optimism, but keep it grounded in realistic and achievable goals, achieving many small successes in a row is more powerful over time than a single big “win” both personally and as a team.

Set your own goals and define your own success criteria, success breeds success so start small and work up incrementally to bigger goals.

Have ambition.

Believe in and support the success of others. Someone else’s success is not YOUR failure and helping someone succeed is a great success in its own right.

Positivity is an attitude, an approach to life in general. Head back, square your shoulders and say let’s go get it done. There will be failure, there will be dark times and disappointment, we all get a share of that, but without the dark there is no light.

So this is my challenge to you. Say it out loud, say it frequently, say it where others can hear.

Positive things happen to positive people.

Good post

Nothing in life worth having was ever easy, ‘if’ you want it bad enough, you make it happen, peoples definition of what ‘want’ really consists of, is very questionable imo.

Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, is largely by your own doing (no fault health issues aside)

Full of positivity as always 7 cant wait for what the year brings, good & bad, they’re both there to be used to your advantage…

Something that always keeps me pushing to stay positive, remembering all the soldiers (male and female) that fought for our freedom, a freedom that i’m eternally grateful for and that should not be squandered with laziness or moaning.
