Anyone not using a smartphone?
Discussion
Following on from the other thread about early mobiles, I wonder if anyone else here isn't presently using a smartphone? I'm not, currently, on the basis of having tried them and failing to make proper use of the 'smart' features. I've now got a cheap clamshell phone with What's-App and nothing else, which does the job and is much lighter and smaller.
My father in law. No internet in the house either. Even reminding him to charge the phone so we can contact him is a chore, especially when my wife s
ts herself and we jump in the car when he won't answer.
You can't teach an old dog new tricks is my view. He's an intelligent man but has no time for them.
Take away his sky racing channel, that would be a different story.

What aspects of the 'smart' features did you struggle to get to grips with and for what reason?I have a mate who doesn't have a smartphone. He uses an original Motorola Razr flip phone. Last time it broke he just got another one on eBay.
He's far from being a luddite. He works in a highly technical IT role, and likes to build/mod his own PC's for home. He just doesn't see the need have everything available on his phone.
My mother has a smartphone but doesn't use any smart features on it, even though she loves her tablet. She doesn't drive any more, and doesn't listen to music, so she really doesn't have any need for the smart features outside her home.

What aspects of the 'smart' features did you struggle to get to grips with and for what reason?I use a hand-me-down Nokia C1, much to the derision of my family members. It suits me fine, texts/calls, that's about it, not even a camera or a torch. I've no need for the internet on my phone and this is cheap to use, pretty much indestructible and the battery lasts about a week on a full charge.
Yep, much cheapness - a good phone for a Scotsman.

Yep, when my old PAYG phone died years ago, I bought a £10 mobile from eBay. A colleague at work was so horrified by how basic it was, she gave me one of her 'cast offs', which I still have. That was at least 7 years ago. I don't even know what it is, other than a Nokia. I use my phone for texting and calls, that's it. Don't have any apps installed.
Considering every single person who has replied to this thread obviously has internet access it’s a bit amusing reading how some consider a dumb phone switching off.
No criticism.
But I work in tech, I enjoy tech, I’m also extremely familiar with the true meaning of Luddite in terms of technological intrusion.
I’m happy to have a smart phone and take advantage of it rather than be a last century person. I understand how to handle some of the personal security options, on that I’m glad my parents have two tech literate sons. But wishing for a world of dumb phones is … not very smart.

I have a now old smartphone, it was top of the range and always used to try to keep up to date, but in reality if I upgraded this phone other than the fact this one is clapped out I would gain almost nothing as it was a great phone and still is.
I'd love to dump it and go back to a super primitive phone, the only feature I like is Spotify in the car, and truth be told I could fairly happily go back to a usb stick of music. Unfortunately I do need it as day to day I need to send pictures and videos to customers and a smart phone using WhatsApp is the simplest and most efficient way to do that. I also would lose income if I didn't keep a basic Facebook presence.
But it wouldn't take much of a life change for me to go full luddite, I hate the intrusion they provide in to life.
