I have a rather rudimentary Excel file that I use for budgeting and haven't really seen anything better online either. What do we use, and are we prepared to share?!

My circumstances are not simple as I try to work out a true picture for the whole household, which means 2 x salaries, 2 x dividends, 2 x P11D, 1 x workplace pension, 1 x student loan repayment (through Self Assessment), 1 x voluntary pension contributions, 1 x hefty gift aid contributions.

I used to use Excel but I found myself using it more for retrospective analysis rather than actually budgeting for the future. In the end I switched to YNAB which works well in terms of forcing me to plan ahead.

I use Excel both for my budget and also “ wealth “ sheets.
With formulas included I have managed to keep both to one sheet of A4 size once printed.
For your various income v outgo needs I would say that with formulas and totals you should be able to do exactly what you want without needing to switch.

Have a look at these on the Vertex 42 website:
https://www.vertex42.com/ExcelTemplates/budgets.ht...

This one might be a good place to start:
https://www.vertex42.com/ExcelTemplates/family-bud...

you can add & remove lines & rename the category details as required.

Thanks - that was helpful. Similar but simpler than my own version, but the growth in 'wealth' is helpful. What is doesn't do, and I have struggled to do, is calculate what tax should be paid. I have to do self-assessment like many of us, and whilst I have a pretty good feel of what will be paid, I now have the option of including the Mrs in dividend income, so working out optimum limits combined with healthy gift-aid contributions (circa 15%), it becomes rather complicated.

I used to use Microsoft Money years ago but have since moved to Excel. It seems fine to be honest,

if you don't mind me asking what are you trying to do which cant be done within excel?

Ignore me - just read your last post smile
