The Blue book section E, part 11.3.11.

"Numbers must be displayed in a durable manner and be black of minimum size 23cm..."

How strictly is this policed at Clubman? would you get away with a red 5 on the nose as per a certain F1 car? After all the car is clearly identifiable etc. and shows an 'appriciation' of motor racing history etc?

It really depends on the Clerk of the Course on the day. If they are strict, then you'll need to conform. Some of them use their discretion as long as the spirit of the rule is there - i.e. the number is legible.

A one-time competitor of mine had a totally black car and with a large brush-script white "7" on the side. It was clearly legible, and obviously the car's number. It went unnoticed, but at one event (Brands, I seem to recall) he was told he had to have the standard size white square with a regulation number on it. It spoiled the look of the car, but rules is rules...

If you think you're in with a good chance of winning, I wouldn't do it. You leave yourself open to mytha and possibly pedantic disqualification.

If you were 4th or slower, I don't think the clerk would be as bothered, if indeed he was going to be bothered in the first place.

The only time I've seen anyone get picky about numbers was at a sprint last year where the Clerk wanted a chat with the owner of a dark blue Elise with numbers made of black electrical tape. They were virtually unreadable.

from a marshals pov, the location is actually more important rather than the actual colour or size of the number. i can usually tell the difference between makes and models of car so know what the car is but if reporting an incident, its easier if the number is in a clearly seen location and not tucked onto the endpolate of a rear wing or over the front wing. CoCs etc prefer numbers rather than "the blue escort!"

Ok, I may wing it then. I just fancy a red #5 on the Chimaera next year, like one of my boy hood heros had, (ahhh nostalgia ) if I can get the number allocation.

Having said that the Thopedo in the same series has a yellow/red/white fade sort of American style thing going on and they don't seem to have a problem.

I wish F1 had to follow similar rules.

If the regs for the championship you're in just say numbers as per blue book etc, you'll prob be alright. Some championships use the numbers for class differentiation so then it's more of an issue. BritGT are Black on white for GT2, white on black for GT3. BRSCC Formula Jedis use black on white and black on red for their 1000 and 600cc classes.

Actually thats a good idea, for us next year, with 4 probable classes and some similar looking cars in different classes, thats got to be the easiest way to differentiate
