A bad idea at any time I'm afraid in my experience - unless you are starting your journey close enough to the airport where you can easily get (and are prepared to pay for) a taxi to get there if it goes wrong.

They're just not reliable enough with a time critical flight involved - and having hold luggage makes it an even bigger PITA at times.

We tried this once. A dedicated Airport train. It only had one job and that was go to Manchester Airport.

We got on at Huddersfield and it was already busy with families and holiday makers. Loads of suitcases and stuff. As it approached Piccadilly there was a bing bong. "We regret to announce that this service to Manchester Airport will terminate at Manchester Piccadilly due to congestion on the line". And that was it. We were deposited in the middle of rush hour Manchester with no information on what platform or train went to the airport.

Never again!

Don't do it. You absolutely cannot rely on trains at the moment.

I would and have done it.

But would not at the moment, not least as TransPennine Express who run most services, are in a state of chaos right now and are pretty poor at running any service at all.
