111R fuel consumption
Discussion
Over 33K miles in my S2 111S I averaged about 36-37 mpg overall. You can scrape 40+ if you drive like a Nun or do long sensible speed trips.
I'm reliably informed that 30mpg is a more realistic average for the 111R. As said though, unless you're doing a significant mileage, does it matter?
Petrol: 93p per litre = £4.22 gallon
Over 10K per annum @ 36 mpg = 278 gallons = £1172
@ 30 mpg = 333 gallons = £1406
Difference of £234 per annum or £4.50 per week.
If you can afford the R over the S, then I can't really imagine £4.50 a week is really an issue!

I can give something of an idea based on my daily-drive 111r. I've not been tracking MPG but I do take note of how far on average I get per tank. I always fill up as soon as the warning light comes on at 1/4-full, and it usually takes approx £30 to fill.
The best I ever got was 300 miles out of one tankfull. That was when I was running it in and therefore consistently using very low revs indeed. The worst I ever got was 114 miles, at a trackday. That was despite filling up at the last station before the track, followed by cruising literally on fumes from Anglesey to the second-nearest petrol station (we had collectively exhausted the local one's supply of petrol).
I would say that that 230-260 miles is the average I get from running a full tank down to the warning light, depending on the amount of motorway cruising, stop-starting, and use of the Loud Pedal. Somewhat bizarrely, it also appears to depend on what you fill up with - although I acknowledge it may just be placebo effect. Whilst gassing up with Optimax or similar "super-premium" fuels doesn't appear to liberate any more power, it does seem to make the car go further. However, like I said, it could just be my mind playing tricks on me!

Hi guys, after a bit of advice. I apologise in advance as you have probobly gone over this a million times (!) but i am new on here. After completely destroying my Fury fireblade i have bought a VVC powered GTM Libra, and guess you guys are the oracle on the K-series!
Just a bit of advice on the tuning front, what can be done to get the most of this engine before major surgery to the insides, then what is best if i want to open it up and do the head ect? AFAIK the VVC fitted is a "later" type (?),brand new crate engine 2 years ago, with individual coils and no HT leads visible (?) and has a "raceline" airbox with ducting to feed it. It also has no CAT (on a Q plate so no emmissions worries and a custom stainless exhaust.
Other than that the engine is standard.
Regards, Lee
PS, to my defence i was looking for a S1 Elise when this came along at a VERY nice price....

try reading www.dvapower.co.uk and the link to the 'K series' page there - everything you ever needed to know about the K series
off the top of my head - about 175BHP max before serious tinkering with the VVC......

I have some relatives who insist on buying anew diesel hatch every 3 years (so its under warranty...even though nothing ever goes wrong with them) ...they try to explain to me its because its cheaper to run...I try to explain that they are throwing away £10K in depreciation every 3 years, just to have a new car that saves them a fiver a week...and try to convince them, for the same total cost of ownership they could run around in a 5 year old luxury German saloon....they still dont get it !
to me - if you are even considering a 'sports car' at £20K then the last thing on the list is MPG......its the same on the TVR forums too...moaning about 'only' getting 10K miles out of some rear tyres....FFS...youve bought a £40K car with 350bhp/ton..what do you expect...that seems great to me...Im lucky to get 5K out of some rears on the Elise....at least they are cheap at £150 a corner....what other car can you put around a track once a month, and still make tyres/discs/pads last 5-15K miles etc?
..I guess its like the old saying with supercars - if you can afford to buy 2 then you can afford to run 1........no point in scraping to buy an F360 and then worry about putting miles on it...buy a 355 for half the price and use it every day

dead right. my dad never shuts the %%%% up about his diesels. he bought an x type for about 22k and had to sell it 16 months later for 16k ??? but...he got 52 mpg - great !
i'd easily trade the ability to overtake some 30mph nobber in my petrol beast than sit for half hour behind him in my diesel almost having a stress seizure. saying that the 120d beemer is quick !
its all about quality of life. the elise provides it for me. truddling along its as economical as any car bar the oil burners..but it has the wild card in its back pocket.
mpg my arse.

so in answer to the original post, I guess the answer is - buy the 111R and dont worry about it !
..of course common sense would dictate, that if you are going to be worried about using it due to fuel economy/servicing costs etc, then buy a 5 year old standard S2 Elise for £15K and spend the rest on having fun driving it as much as you like for the next few years...as thats what its all about
