Happy new year fellow PH watch lovers!

I’m currently considering a used Tudor BB58 purchase as a daily wearer, having been surprised by how good value they now look, especially from 2020 which was a big birthday year for me.

In addition, looking at part exchanging a 2001 Breitling Superocean I have had since new. As whilst it was a 21st gift, I haven’t worn it regularly, if at all in the last 3 years.

My gut says do it, as it gets no use and will be replaced by something I will wear regularly. Wonder if anyone has done similar and whether they had second thoughts/part ex remorse.

Been offered a good price for it and price to change to a 2020 navy blue BB58 on the nato strap would be £1300.

Thanks

Alex

I think it depends on the sentimentality....

If it was a gift from a parent no longer with you, who bought the watch because they wanted you to have a nice one, then I would go for it. You are achieving still what they wanted from the gift!

If they wanted the above, but were a life long Breitling aficionado, and 4 generations of you have worn it previous, then perhaps think twice!

If you do keep it, look at a strap change for a new lease of life....

Hadn’t thought about the continuation angle, think that seals it for me.

It was a gift from my parents, both thankfully still with us.

My dad has since given me his Speedy which my mum and I bought for his 60th in 2002, so that will be the watch I keep and pass down to my son in time.

I was given a watch by my parents that I never wore. It bothered them that I never wore it and they encouraged me to exchange it for something else, which I did and I don't regret it.

This one was worn pretty solidly for almost 20 years, day in, day out.

Time for a change and to put it towards something that will be a well used part of a small collection I think.

Sounds a good plan - good luck with it.

I would look at the base Panerai as well as the Tudor....I don't think you can get much more watch and brand for the money at £4k personally (whilst appreciating all is subjective!).

I’ve often looked at Panerais online and in the window, but rarely been taken by them for some reason.

This is more of switching a watch that’s no longer worn, with a little extra cash for a solid daily that will be a good holiday watch too.

At least there is some continuity with the trade going against another watch.

I owned a Rolex datejust from 1989 until June last year. I purchased new and wore it continuously until about 5 years ago, when ageing eyesight meant I couldn't read it without specs on.
As much as I loved it, it just sat in a watch case.
Saw a blue Black Bay 58, and did a good part/ex deal, and now wear this daily. No regrets, and I can see it unaided.

Personally if you can financially afford the Tudor without PX'ing I'd keep the SuperOceon,

You've had and worn it for 20 years and who's to say in 3~5 you'll think back and wish you'd not got rid of ... It's part of your life and journey
Once gone ... you'll never retrieve it .. etc

In other news ... T6 star's in the latest C4 series of Hoarders Buried Alive

I recently inherited a watch from my grandad, but the watch itself isn't to my taste and have considered the same thing. I'd get a lot more use out of PX'ing it for something I like, but feel I'd lose the sentimental value.

This has escalated!

I’ve been offered £1200 against the Breitling and currently waiting to see what discount might be achievable against the following from two different dealers.

BB58 navy blue on nato
BB58 925 on nato
New ranger on bracelet
BB Pro GMT on bracelet

Should wrap things up tomorrow hopefully, one way or the other!

Have you tried the Tudors on?

Ive always worn large-ish watches (40mm minimum) and I found the Tudors, apart from the GMT, a bit dainty.

Just a thought considering the SO is a chunky watch!

It’s a good point. I have tried both of the BB58 variations on and liked how they wore.

I’ve got the Speedy as well, which is larger and wear a Garmin fenix 6s to train, so adjusting to something smaller took some time, but have had a Seiko Alpinist for two years now and love how that fits.

Your set then. I think the BB58 is a solid watch, although I think the regular Black Bays are better value and a little nicer.

I wasnt mega impressed with the Ranger, but it was on a Nato, which didnt help its lack of heft.

What model of SO do you have out of interest?

Ended up doing a deal on a very clean BB58 navy blue from 2020. It’s on the bracelet as well, so looking at some nato options, the OEM Tudor nato is surprisingly expensive. So think I’ll opt for an Erika’s Original in Trident with the grey stripe.

Also got my eye on a Vangaurd rubber strap for the summer.

Hopefully have the watch by Thursday, certainly by Friday.

To answer your question AK47, my SO was a 2001 A17345 with the matte black dial.

Sentimental? When my son was born in 1994 I purchased a Tag SS, wore it for years a decent watch, when he was approaching 18 I had it returned to Tag, serviced, polished up and gave it to him as one of his presents, original box and papers even the original receipt, 10 yrs on he swears by his Apple watch that tells him to do everything in his daily diary. Kids eh! I've got a Tudor BB in blue really nice watch I love mine, son's not getting this one!!!

Very happy with the end result here, even if there were some feelings of sadness packing up the Superocean this morning for collection.

Have sized the bracelet, and can confirm that personally I have no issues with the faux rivets whatsoever!

Well done. I have previously mentioned that I have the same.
Mine is 3 seconds fast since the clocks changed. I keep it regulated by its position. During the day when wearing it loses a few seconds. At night I leave it dial down, and it gains a few.
The bracelet marks easily, but a careful rub with a green Scotchbrite soon sorts it.
