BMW 335i Touring (and an X3 M40i) | PH Fleet

Hell freezes over at Matt's house

“You’re only getting photos of the two together so I can get mugged off in the forum.” My girlfriend doesn’t know loads and loads about cars, but she knows all too well that fast estates beat fast SUVs on PH. I honestly can’t call the reaction; some on Twitter suggested there’d been an alien abduction to consider such a swap - “bewildered” was my personal favourite response. On the other hand, there are quite a few forum threads running on X3 M40is from PHers that love their BMWs, so let’s see. If this must be the end of my PH tenure, then it’s been a good run…

Just to clarify from the off, this X3 is now very much Alice’s car. The 335i was ‘ours’. We were paying off the loan for the Touring together, whereas the X3 has been purchased outright by her. So, really, your ire (or admiration) should be directed at her. We could have made the 3 Series work (just), we could have got a 5 Series Touring, we could have got an X3 with less than 360hp. But here we are.

And I have to say – in hushed tones – the X3 is pretty lovely. After my very-limited experience thus far, you understand. It feels sufficiently nice that I’m half-expecting someone to collect it next week and return it to BMW, as per the standard press-car scenario. There are all the great bits of a modern BMW interior with all the practicality benefits we were after: the rear bench is far more accommodating than the 3 Series', with more room for baby and people, plus enough boot space as well for doggy and big buggy.

This is all to be expected, given it’s that much bigger and more expensive, but there’s a lot here for both Alice and I (and our son) to enjoy. Loath though I am to say it, an X3 is already making family journeys a little less stressful, and that’s undoubtedly a boon. Alice loves it, most importantly, and I’m really looking forward to more time behind the wheel when the new-car novelty wears off for her and there’s a long journey to do.

Not least because this hasn’t just been bought for easier access to Isofix points and a higher driving position. As an M40i, this X3 is powered by the 3.0-litre B58 straight six that’s also found in the Toyota Supra, Morgan Plus Six, and a host of other M Performance BMWs. As a 2020 car, it’s before the introduction of the mild hybrid tech, but 360hp and 369lb ft is more than enough – BMW reckons it’ll reach 62mph in 4.8 seconds. What’s become immediately apparent after driving the 3s back-to-back is how much more responsive the SUV’s powertrain feels. The gearbox is snappier in its decision making and the additional torque (the 335 makes 295lb ft) ensuring the X3 almost always feels faster. Which I wasn’t expecting.

The Touring was weighed at its MOT, and came in at 1,745kg. The DIN claim for the M40i is 1,845kg, so perhaps the advantage shouldn’t be a surprise. In the same gear at similar revs, there’s not much in it, but it’s the X3 that feels faster. Aided, in fact – and here’s another surprise – by a more stirring soundtrack. The exhaust of the X3 fizzes and rasps really entertainingly, and whatever’s happening with the induction noise is actually more convincing than the 3 Series. Crikey. It was even within 2mpg of the Touring on the 150 miles home from Christmas…

We – sorry, Alice – was also lucky to get an M40i with lots of the option boxes ticked, so this has the head-up display, big wheels, adaptive suspension and panoramic roof. Black wouldn’t have been either of our first choices, but it wasn’t a deal breaker. Especially when dark blue is as interesting as the colour palette gets. Perhaps it’s not the coolest BMW ever made, though it seems a very good one: great powertrain, decent handling, super refined and reasonably efficient. Plus it’s quite practical – I can see already why people like them.

Which is to take nothing away from the 335i, of course. I’ve loved owning it, and did everything possible for us to keep it. In many ways it’s the opposite of the X3, despite them appearing to share so much: rare, unassuming, not the obvious choice. It served us admirably, and I loved driving it. Trying to get some pictures of the two together was a great reminder of what I was so fond of and what will be missed, from the compact dimensions and neatly judged design, to those lovely analogue dials and bum-on-the-deck driving position. No doubt about it, it will be sorely missed. All being well, it’ll be with its new owner by the time you read this; a deposit was taken less than a day after listing the ad, which was a result for January. Obviously, I’d like to take all the credit for the quick sale, but beyond the awesomeness of the PH classifieds, I suspect asking a little less than it probably could have made helped get VDO sold sooner. Buying and selling cars makes me anxious as hell, and being able to sort the process so quickly almost feels worth a few hundred quid over the back and forth.

So there we are: out with the small-wheeled, clear-glassed, big-engined estate, and in with the school-run SUV on 21s. I know - there will be a revolt, and I've got no one else to blame (save Alice). If there’s sufficient interest (and I actually get to drive it), then I can write more updates, but I’m realistic about that prospect. Perhaps if the B58’s well-known tuning potential is explored, there might be a longer story to tell. But rest assured, there is a second car hunt on which will have a little less to do with practicality and a lot more with PH-worthiness. Hopefully more on that next time.

No revolt from me Matt - although admittedly I’m somewhat biased having made the same move, albeit from an E91 335i M Sport.
And should be no shame in this! I agree that the 3 series tourings (current and previous generations) are more special, in large part because they’re rare. But were estates always appreciated in the way they are by some of us now? SUV’s are a sign of the times, I wonder how they’ll be looked on in several years when everyone has gone electric. I think prejudice should be put aside in this case though, the X3 M40i isn’t exactly a sold out family bus, if it was it wouldn’t have a B58 under the bonnet.
Each to their own, but I’ve really enjoyed my M40i in the few months I’ve had it. Nonetheless, it’s great that you’ll also be able to complement it with something else less practical to satisfy the purer fun factor!

I went X3M comp having had multiple 3 series tourings and despite the volume figure which suggest it isn’t much bitter than a 3, it really is. No way my kids would or could get in the back of a 3 series touring, and again, despite figures, X3 boot feels huge. Its great as a bus but I do think hideous compared with earlier (not current gen) tourings though, but for the daily shed that it is, doesn’t matter much.

Saved by the last 2 sentences. I seriously considered a 3 series touring as a “do it all” car, but would have been compromised as both a family car and a fun car.

I'm not too sure r.e. rear leg room - I've been in an F31 6' behind 6' and it's entirely acceptable, if not exactly luxurious. The boot is another story, the X3 is a *much* better shape - or rather the F31 is as pokey & awkward as an estate gets.

Here we go, another SUV buyer with the same sadly predictable justifications.

"I like the improved visibility!" Sure, but you've made it harder for the rest of us to see around your blacked-out monster. Not that you care, right?

"I need the added practicality for my family!" Once your child can walk and no longer needs to be carried everywhere, they will find getting into their car seat harder, not easier. Your dog already hates you. And obviously using a roofbox or carrying bikes, surf boards or anything else needed for a genuinely active lifestyle is harder.

And all the time, on every journey, you're burning more fuel and emitting more CO2. Doesn't this matter to you?

Someone please save us from the SUV plague and the self-entitlement that comes as standard.

Isn’t the use of SWMBO a bit tiresome? Reminds me of that prat Cropley in Autocar who insists on calling his wife the Steering Committee.

Seems we have ourselves an agitator in the poster ‘scrapped’. 2 posts - 6 months, and negativity towards a story about ICE cars. You are on the wrong website - most likely. This is a site called pistonheads - about cars, by car enthusiasts, who are freely enjoying their rights to do so. As I always say - the PH crew are a very welcoming bunch, and all are welcome here, but what’s not welcome is the tone and angry/negative sentiment levelled at others on the site - based on your belief system.

Generally ‘looking for an argument’ to further your views.

Here is a feature from the early 2000’s - from this site. A bit tongue in cheek - but if you read between the lines - you should get the jist of the message.

Please be more (have some) consideration that this is a free country and these activities are all totally legal and normal. Thanks.

Not sure why people feel the need to defend buying SUVs. If you have kids they are great.

If you prefer estates. They are great too.

Life advice 101: stop giving a s*it what anyone else thinks. They are going to bh behind your back anyway.

Umm.. it is possible to enjoy, own and appreciate ICE cars and realise the science is undisputed and the question isn’t whether there’s man made global warming but how to mitigate it.

A petrolhead friend of mine, of whom I have great respect and admiration once said these words "X3 M40i would be the perfect car for you".

He was right but we didn't get one. If I could get one though I would. Set of Winters and off skiing is still a fantasy trip I fancy doing.

A very solid replacement for the 335i

Makes sense to have done so with your reasons

I look forward to the updates on this and the fun car hunt no doubt now underway!

Exactly this. Some people are sensitive about other people's buying decisions.

I am thinking of getting an E63 estate to cart the kids about. My sort of practical family car smile

I had an M340d touring for 6 months, loved it but jumped across to an M5 Competition last year. The M5 was not without its charms, but I've just switched back to another M340d touring which tells you all you need to know about the car. Cue 'Swiss army knife' motoring journalist cliches etc.

That’s what I call my wife, and if it was good enough for Rumpole Of The Bailey…
Would you prefer ‘the trousers’, because in my household my wife definitely wears them…

Anyhoo, I have an Octavia estate, and prefer the way it drives to my VW Anorak (sic) which is a great 4x4 if a little agricultural
The only advantages of the VW are the visibility and load area, the space in the back is smaller than the Octy and it’s less economical, slower etc etc but put some chill out tunes on the stereo and it can be quite a chilling place to cover miles
Each to their own, I won’t criticise anyone’s choice of car, it’s a free country (I think) and we are allowed freedom of speech (not sure about that..!) so if you want a Caterham as your daily then good on you, if you can afford a Bent-tiger then good for you and your choice..

Shape it seems is everything (I guess explaining why I live alone) but the measured volume of a vehicle is only part of the story. I remember how the Disco 4 was such a superb shape for carrying 'stuff' while the 5 somehow lost a lot of the easy loading and useful square shape, for me it's a subject dominated by roof height above floor, a high roof may be difficult to style but it allows a more upright seating position allowing better knee angle and a nice square load area.
