I've got 20k sitting around earning 2.5% AER. I will be looking at investing in property in the next 3 to 12 months, depending on market conditions. I'd like to make this earn more whilst I wait. What are my options?

On that timeframe, not a lot that would be worth the bother or additional risk

Your options are savings products.

Absolutely not investments.

Are you happy with the risk of making a loss?

If not then saving products are your only option.

I don't mind some risk. All I know is that 2.5% (or £40 a month) isn't the most efficient use of my money. I can make that in my sleep.

Why do you need advice from internet weirdos then?

Just do a bit of wheeling and dealing as apparently you could make 10% easily on that £20k then.

3 to 12 months is cash deposits only. Only other option is Premium Bonds if nearer the 12 months (as you don't get entered in the draw for a clear month) with the risk being you get no return and the potential upside being more in wins than a deposit account would give you.

There are NO other sensible options. For equity or similar risk you need a 5 year timescale to make even slightly sensible. I'm am IFA by the way.

Sorry for being naive, what do you mean by 'cash deposits'? As in depositing cash for an annual percentage?

If you weren't the dullest tool in the box, you'd be able to tell me why I'm not doing that. Apparently.

a Chip account will increase the savings interest to 3%, every little helps.

20k isn’t a lot of money. Be happy with your guaranteed 2.5%.

Correct. I'll leave it there for now as it's easily accessible.

Where do you live? You could bottle up some tap water and rebrand as “Peckham spring water” or similar.
