Rolls-Royce announces record sales year for 2022

More than 6,000 cars sold in a year for the first time in Rolls' history

Rolls Royce delivered 6,021 cars in 2022, another record 12 months in the 118-year history of the brand. It represents an eight per cent increase on 2021’s tally of 5,586. As an indicator of just how rapid progress has been, it was only in 2019 that Rolls-Royce sold more than 5,000 cars for the first time. What global health crisis/supply chain issue/recession, eh?

Rolls says that its cars reached clients ‘in around 50 countries worldwide’, with the popularity of (and value of) its Bespoke commissions higher than ever. CEO Torsten Muller Otvos has suggested that the average price of a unique Rolls Royce is half a million Euros. He added: “Bespoke IS Rolls-Royce, and commissions were also at record levels last year, with our clients’ requests becoming ever more imaginative and technically demanding – a challenge we enthusiastically embrace.”

The sales growth enjoyed has not been unique to one area, however, which will be encouraging for future success. ‘Particularly strong year-on-year growth’ was seen in Europe, USA, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, presumably as clients in those regions freed themselves from Covid lockdowns and were able to splash the cash once more.

Interestingly, China, which has suffered persistent lockdowns last year in some areas, experienced a decline compared to 2021 - ‘ongoing headwinds there led to a single digit drop in sales’ - although it remains the second biggest Rolls Royce market behind The Americas.

This year marks 20 years since the rebirth of Rolls at Goodwood; back then it was just the Phantom being offered, and only one was being made per day, for some idea of the progress that’s been made in two decades. There are now 2,500 people working there, with more than 150 jobs created last year alongside its apprentice and internship schemes.

You wouldn’t bet against 2023 surpassing 2022, either, especially if the situation in China changes over the coming months. There likely won’t be any Spectre deliveries in 2023, as that’s only due on sale in the final quarter of this year, but Rolls’ first EV has undoubtedly reignited interest in the brand. And with Dawn, Wraith, Cullinan, Ghost, Ghost Extended, Phantom and Phantom Extended, prospective buyers aren’t short of options even before the manufacturer's first electric car appears.

Great news and I hope to see their success continue.

BMW is doing a great job in managing the brand IMO.

Does kind of fit with us plebs all getting rinsed for every penny, kind of indicative of where all that cash is going perhaps....

But, keeping all those folk in jobs building them, a better outcome for RR than you would have expected 25 years ago.

Pretty much my sentiments. I'm sure a powerfully built director type will be along any minute to tell us we're just not working as hard as he does.

Great news, still vary rarely see one about which is a good thing imo as it’s still a bit special when you do.
Id love to experience the whole process of ordering and owning a brand new one.
Still surprises me how many black with black interiors there are though with the amount of colours and extra things they can do on offer.

Kudos to the company, and good to see them creating seemingly sustainable UK jobs, including from apprentice level upwards.

I'd be interested to see a matrix of sales by model and region. Is that publishable information?

Even more impressive when you consider not being able to sell to any Oligarchs in Russia.
Well Done RR

I think that BMW have done a fab job here. When there was the split with Bentley, the Rolls job seemed by far the harder of the two, as the brand had been eclipsed by Bentley and appeared to have lost it's way.

They have done a great job re-establishing it. That said, I find the actual cars to be rather vulgar and ugly ( especially the Cullinan ) but appreciate that I am not nor never will be their target market.

They've just given their staff a 10% pay rise.

Not my problem.

No-one owes me anything but equally I don't owe anyone either. If you can't afford one, it is what it is.

I don't think there are many oligarchs left in Russia! Anyway, if you have an obscure network of off-shore companies registered in various tax havens, it would be child's play to order your new Roly Poly through Novichok Holdings (Bahamas) LLP.

6000 cars sold... It does show just how niche Rolls Royce is... there were over 1.3m Teslas sold in '22 and that is a relative tiddler vs VW etc.

Even Ferrari managed nearly 10,000 cars by the end of Q3.

Rolls Royce are presumably untroubled by electrification as such a power plant suits the cars very well without taking anything away, and range is less of an issue with cars like this.

Hate to be negative, but thats my thoughts too.
Although, great for jobs and the brand, it does reflect the massive shift of wealth over the last few years (And taste, looking at some of those colour choices!)

This is good news. Even the seemingly growing contingent of ‘eat the rich’ types on PH must see that this gives employment to British workers.
