Purchasing a Cherished Registration Privately - Query
Discussion
I am hoping that someone may be able to assist here, apologies for the convoluted way of telling the story.
I recently purchased a cherished registration through a private sale, money sent through PayPal, vendor posted me the original copy of the Certificate of Entitlement (V750 Form), two days later.
The purchaser details completed on the form are the details of the individual I bought the registration from and under section 1 of the form, 'Assigning this vehicle registration number', he has signed the Purchaser box. He has also signed the Section 6 'Signature' box.
I have no desire to assign this registration to a vehicle in the short term but the slight concern I have is what is there to stop him contacting the DVLA and saying, 'I have lost the form, please re-isssue'.
In short, is there anyway of me doing something to ensure I am the legal owner of the registration, without assigning it to a vehicle and then removing it immediately and incurring the cost that brings.
It is probably a straight forward answer but finding an answer online was weirdly not that simple.
Thanks in advance.

The previous owner doesn't even need to contact DVLA about a lost form. If they kept a record of the certificate reference number they can assign it to their vehicle using the online system (without holding the physical certificate).
The only way to make sure it is "yours" is to assign it to a vehicle and then leave it on there or take it back off onto retention with a new certificate.

I’ve a few in similar circumstances.
Whilst I cannot change the vendors name, I can change his address, to mine! Any attempt to retake the number would then be addressed to me!
So simply send it back to DVLA ,( having taken a copy) for a free change of address. A new one will come back a few days later, his name/ your house.

That’s what I’ve always done, but even that’s not foolproof. The only way to make sure it is "yours" is to assign it to a vehicle and then leave it on there or take it back off onto retention with a new certificate.
DVLA can still take action/you can still lose the plate if it turns out that it was misappropriated by the vendor.
Thank you all for the initial responses which are of assistance. I now need to find a car without a cherished registration to assign it to!
I take it you could assign one and then put it straight onto retention within the same day? Thinking for insurance purposes etc. it would be a faff to add it then have to remove it.

Not the same day, you need to wait for the V5 to be returned, my last experience of this was that it came back within a week after a online transfer.I take it you could assign one and then put it straight onto retention within the same day? Right that is a bit of a faff then. I’ll have to try and find a workaround or a friend with a suitably dated car to add the registration to!
Be aware that if you assign the plate temporarily to a friends car, then when it goes back on retention the certificate will be in your friends name; it essentially follows the identity of the last car it was assigned to. Best thing to do is assign it to a car already registered in your name. Safest way.
