After seeing some of the cars at S club heaven I have started to think about stripping off the waxoil covering the chassis and repainting it in red again...

Obviously without wax oil it wont be so protected but you can at least see what is happening to the chassis with regular inspection... and it will let me give the cahssis a good inspection to ensure it is ok now.
Obvioulsy this is going to be a s***ty job but one that may keep me busy during the colder months....

What is the best thing to clean off the wax oil... apart from someone else who you have paid :hehe: nand is it just hammerite red paint you use?

cheers Doddze

I refurbished a 3000M chassis by removing the waxoyl/old rust and painting it in black hammerite. It's not the easiest of jobs and unless you get absolutely all of the waxoyl off the hammerite will not stick properly or as I found will chip off easily.
I used white spirit, followed by gunk and water, but to do a really thorough job I think a steam cleaner would be the most effective way.

I've seen clear Waxoyl in Halfords - I've never tried it, but presume it's as effective as the black stuff. That way you can protect your chassis and admire it simultaneously!

You need a steam cleaner and a lift. Trying to do this any other way is going to be a real PITA. You could try hiring a steam cleaner and doing it on axel stands, but I think you will probably just end up burnt, wet and frustrated.

Trying to remove heavy oils with solvents is very time consuming and you spend most of the time diluting the oil and spreading it about.

After you are sure you have all of it off finish with a rag and some sign writers prep to remove all traces of oil. Gunk may do a similar thing, but i am not sure if it is a true paint prep.

If you want my ha'penny. Don't use Hammerite it chips easily when it is cold, so in the winter the bits that get stones just come off. This is not unexpected as it is an enamel, hence brittle. This is the case no matter how well you prepare it.

I use waxoil with 30% axle oil on the rear chassis, it wets well, looks black and sticks like sh*t to a blanket.

If you want a nice finish that will last, try waxoil spray underseal, it is not the rubber stuff, but black spray containing waxoil that dries to a nice matt finish. It looks fine and covers all the old stuff once you are at a solid base. My engine bay chassis bits look good, and are all done this way.

The only real way to do it properly, if you want to posh up, is get the chassis off and re powder coat. I am not sure it is worth the bother, unless there is some other pressing reason.

Have fun

White spirit takes mine off, then gunk and water.
Ohh yes, and at least one weeks holiday off work that you did not tell the family about in advance, and as many old T shirts as you have saved up for the job!
The clear waxoil is as good as the black but for 'clear' read 'light brown'
My Chassis is white hammerite and just goes a bit off colour after waxoiling, till the muck gets to it then its very off-white!

A good old blast through loads of big puddles might get it off! It's the only time you'll have the chance to do it!
