Towing car recommendation

I know there are threads on towing car recommendations but my circumstances may be slightly different.

My old Toyota landcruiser is no more and so I am looking for a towing car/pick-up which is used for the following:

- Towing a horsebox 1x a month so needs to be 3500kg capable
- isofix as we will need a car seat in it
- rugged as we live on a farm so it needs to be able to pull a tractor out of the field on occasion (hopefully not too often)
- around 20k (so clearly 2nd hand)
- will do 8k per year miles

I've been looking at Ford Ranger's but my question is:
- What else could I consider that would meet these requirements

Happy to go and do my own research once I have a list of cars/options but would like help on what to look at as previously I knew I wanted a landcruiser and only looked at those

Defender or Disco 4 woud fit the bill. With some decent tyres on for that trctor pull. Both can ow 3500kgs and in the cae of my D4, with relative ease.

I own a defender too, a fuly rebuilt 90. a lovely thing, but i wouldn't do 8k miles a year in it!

I did 300,000km on my old Cayenne S-lived outside in Canadian winters, 50,000km towing a loaded car trailer. Was rated for 7700lbs tow.

L322 with some bork-fund change? A good 4.4 TDV8 can be had for £15k, will do everything in your list, and be a much nicer thing to spend time in than the pickup.

Plenty of land cruisers break down too - like the German brands they trade on the reputation of older cars.

Does it actually need to be 3500kg towing capacity for a horse box? Unless you're carrying two shire horses I doubt the loaded trailer would be anywhere near that heavy.

The horse box may well be plated as 3500kg max laden weight but it doesn't mean it weighs that much with a horse in. I think you can tow 3500kg plated trailer with a vehicle rated to tow less provided the actual weight of the trailer doesn't exceed the limit on the car. Or, if you want to be absolutely sure you're meeting the rules, get the trailer down-plated to a more realistic max weight for what you're carrying.

I've seen plenty of lower capacity vehicles towing horse boxes including some larger normal cars and its unlikely they're all breaking the law - if you keep the towing weight down to 2500kg, it includes many more vehicles. At that towing weight, a Kia Sorento or Hyundai Santa-Fe may be a good bet it you're after something rugged and reliable.

- I do think we need 3000kg as we haul 2 hefty horses at times . Our horse box is about 1000kg, so playing it a little safe but with Saddles, bridles, hay, water etc it soon adds up.
- We need a work horse vehicle given the farm and sometimes we tow the odd thing behind it (like a roller) when the tractor is not suitable
- Comfort is of less importance
- We are looking for reliable. I know it depends on the car but it just needs to work and be able to work with ease as we
