Comfortable car, 6ft 6", up to £40k

New job and I recon I'll be doing about 20k miles a year. I'm 6ft 6" and want to be comfortable. Current car is a mk7.5 golf r, whilst it's fine for the job I personally just don't find doing this many miles comfortable, I want to be proper comfy.

Suggestions please?

- Reliable
- Not massive service bills
- bit of power, but needs economy.
- must had adaptive cruise and apple car play
- bit different / nice ideally
- good for tip runs
- newer the better. I have a car allowance that's reasonable so have to be sensible.

I'm thinking, 730d, 520d touring, A8? But don't really know, happy for something smaller if it suits a taller driver.

Max ideally £40k. £30k be nicer. £20k even better as then I'll get a caterham (maybe just a boring passat?).

I'm 6ft4 and in a similar position looking to buy next year.

As I don't want an SUV I'm currently torn between

BMW 5 series, Mercedes E class and Audi S6 and Audi S7. Think I'm leaning towards the BMW options but I'll have to have a good look at the E class first.

Another one worth considering is the Skoda Superb, they are great for leg room.

That's the winner for something to just batter up and down the motorway imo.

I know you scoffed at the Camry but Japanese big saloons do comfy cruising better than almost anyone because their primary market are American pensioners

If I were doing 20k a year again I'd go for a Volvo. 20k a year kills your love for anything so you may as well go for comfort.

I'm 6ft 5 and have a 2018 (new shape) Volvo V60 T5, which has really comfy seats with lumbar / bolster leg support adjustment. Mine is an inscription (luxury) spec, so not sure if all of these adjustments are standard. Spacious for the driver and plenty room for it to take an extra inch! The adaptive cruise is really good although it goes up and down in 5mph increments. I don't have car play, but it is available on newer models, and can be retro fitted. The standard auto gearbox is quite sluggish, although I have a polestar map which massively improves this. Also much less common that the BMW / Merc / Audi if you're looking for something different. Big dog V90 looks good as well although I've not driven one.

I had an F11 5 series which had a way bigger boot for tip runs and loads of space. The seats in that were great too, but not quite as adjustable. Cruise could be adjusted by 1mph / 5mph increments which was weirdly useful. Loads of engines to choose from in the BMW.

Personally, I'd save a bit of cash and go for a Skoda Superb. The hatchback version has a huge boot, the estate version is cavernous. The top of the line sportline version is pretty quick as well.

I'm 6ft 4 and have an F11 5 Series, as mentioned before it's got a huge boot but being as I do travel round the country as well it's amazingly comfortable. I do miss the distance controlled cruise control my Golf MK7 had but that's about my only gripe. Stereo is surprisingly good as well. Had it for about 4 years (it's a 520D) alongside various other cars and don't see myself getting rid any time soon.

Biggest issue I have had was the alternator failing, and it seems to need rear airbag replacements every couple of years but they are surprisingly simple to do, takes about 15 mins.

I'd vote E Class. Loads of room in the W212 for me at 6'3" and definitely more spacious than the F10, although that was fine too. But any of the big saloons/ estates will be ok for space and adjustability, definitely worth having a decent test drive in one with the seats you'll be getting as they make a difference.

I'm 6'7 I do similar miles & have had a Mondeo Vignale it's been a fantastic (& reliable) comfortable nice amount of power (the air cooled seats came into their own this summer) BUT this will be going at the end of the year to make way for an E400d coupe the drivetrain is a peach & along with the orthopedic seats it cruises in comfort with ease.

I think Sportline is just a trim level? I don't believe the engines are any different
