Aston promises 'extraordinary' new model in 2023

Famed manufacturer celebrates its 110th anniversary this year - expect it to really push the boat out

Though significant automotive anniversaries are announced every January (a tradition PH has stuck to), 2023 already feels like it’s going to be a big one for both specific cars and companies more generally. Take Aston Martin for example, which celebrates 110 years of existence this Sunday. It was January 15th, 1923, when Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford formed a partnership, working out of a mews workshop in London, that would become Aston Martin.

A big year for the brand, then, and Aston Martin is promising much more for 2023 than just a glitzy shoot with a 1923 Razor Blade (which had an Aston engine) and Valkyrie alongside a marketing campaign called ‘Intensity: 110 Years in the Making’. There’s already been an announcement of the DBS 770 Ultimate, and the next 12 months will apparently see a ‘new, strictly limited, exclusive Aston Martin model’ revealed. We’ll see a lot of it, in fact, as the 110th anniversary is going to be celebrated at the British Grand Prix, Festival of Speed, Pebble Beach and ‘other major events across Aston Martin’s key regions’.

The regular Astons aren’t being ignored, either, as the much-needed facelift for the DBS, DB11 and Vantage is also coming on stream. Just last year Lawrence Stroll suggested that all three will be like “all-new cars” with the update, so expectations are high. The latest release suggests that the next generation of sports cars ‘will further enhance Aston Martin’s focus on ultra-luxury, high performance and driving intensity’. Let’s hope all that at least includes a new interior.

With 2023 also marking 75 years of the DB nameplate (and six decades of the DB5), there will be plenty for Aston to bring the bunting out for over the coming months - especially with the Gaydon HQ turning 20 as well. CEO Amedeo Felisa added: “Our 110th year promises to be just as exciting as our first, as we turn a new chapter in Aston Martin history with the launch of our next generation of sports cars and the reveal of an extraordinary special model later this year that will celebrate this unique milestone.” Fire away now with all guesses, educated or otherwise, on what that might be…

Perhaps a stunning new version of their most significant car of the last 110 years?

Look, I've got to be honest, I think the new model is a backward step.

The prototype looks to have fairly narrow wheels so I don't think it will handle well on track. Accommodation looks a bit tight as well, and I'm not sure they've focused enough energy on aerodynamics, safety or styling. They haven't even painted it yet.

Oh, wait, that's the 1923 model.

I'm probably missing something really stupid, but wasn't that 100 years ago, not 110?

Isn't 1923 to 2023 exactly 100 years and not 110 ?

Maybe they’d be better employed getting their last ‘extrordinary’ car, Valkyrie, out of the door, before they try and sell any new ones?

“all-new cars” with the update
So like a Porsche 911 update then. Paint, a detail turned 90 deg, carbon bits and an anniversary plaque?

Always reckon if Jaag had had more ambition and finance, Aston would have made a great fit for Jag.
Sadly, both seem to have caught Lotus disease. Shunting from one false dawn to the next recently.
Hopefully this will mark a turn up for the books and will be a great success.

Nope - you're not missing anything......Perhaps Rishi needs to change the "18" for a new number
"Rishi Sunak plans to make all PH journalists study maths until well after 18"

Two significant milestones for 2023 then - an exciting new car and passing $1b in debt. Regardless of what the PR machine belches out for media consumption, this business is sadly in a shockingly bad state. Geely does start to look like its only hope, regardless of Stroll's efforts to stay in charge.

Aston Martin was founded in 1913, so 110 years is correct. I'm not sure why they've elected to photograph a 1923 car, however.

I'm not saying car manufacturers are bad at inflating figures, but 1923 to 2023 is not 110 years.
Having said that, Aston Martin was founded in 1913...

That Valkyrie has got no roof, so how do you get in, considering the hard top has gullwing doors? Pole vault?

My heart sinks whenever I read words like this.
Surely if creating something "new" Aston need to be creating something that will help claw back the debt they're in so as to secure their very existence? I'm sure (or would at least hope!) the sale of any exclusive models can make a small profit, but what's needed is something with greater sales, otherwise it's like the old rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic?

Aston Martin was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford.

The two had joined forces as Bamford & Martin the previous year to sell cars made by Singer from premises in Callow Street, London where they also serviced GWK and Calthorpe vehicles. Martin raced specials at Aston Hill near Aston Clinton, and the pair decided to make their own vehicles.

The first car to be named Aston Martin was created by Martin by fitting a four-cylinder Coventry-Simplex engine to the chassis of a 1908 Isotta Fraschini.

They acquired premises at Henniker Mews in Kensington and produced their first car in March 1915. Production could not start because of the outbreak of the First World War, when Martin joined the Admiralty and Bamford joined the Army Service Corps

I suspect Geely are waiting to buy it for a penny on the pound when it finally fails, and the access to finance and debt completely dries up. Again.

I’m sure you’re right, but I prefer my idea.
They should call the open version the Adrian Newey edition. Anyone who drives it will have all their hair sucked off by the engine air intake and vacuum effect and end up looking like the great man himself.
