Five-door Suzuki Jimny finally breaks cover

Slightly more practical version of tiny tearaway is revealed in Dehli

Many people can muster at least a little love for the wee Jimny. Even if the emotion isn’t strong enough to cause you to throw some cash into the commercial-styled variant Suzuki offers in the UK, its cheekiness and strong showing on a muddy track endow it with more than a little left-field appeal. In fact, you could argue that it’s never been more appealing. In a world of evermore amorphous offerings, with little more to pull than a bigger screen than your local IMAX and homogenised electric propulsion, the back-to-basics three-door Jimny is the perfect antidote.

Even the Jimny is becoming more complex now, though - but don’t worry. This added complexity involves nothing more onerous than two extra doors. This is the five-door Jimny, which has been launched at Delhi’s Auto Expo 2023 by Suzuki’s South Asian subsidiary, Maruti Suzuki India Limited. Sales will begin this year, but sadly the mood music seems to be limited to India, Africa and Latin America. That does lead to speculation, of course. Has it been engineered to meet the crash tests and emission regs that it would need to pass in order to go on sale in Europe and North America? Who knows.

Anyway, we can tell you that it’s been engineered with an extra 340mm in the wheelbase to accommodate those two rear doors. That brings the wheelbase up to 2,590mm and the overall length, including the tailgate-mounted spare wheel, to 3,985. Height and width remain the same at 1,702mm and 1,645mm respectively. The engine is also the same 1.5-litre four-cylinder, which in the UK-spec three-door model puts out 101hp and 95lb ft of torque - and with its kerbweight said to have increased to as much as 1,250kg (depending on spec), the performance is likely to seem even more sedate.

Of course, the Jimny has never been about straight-line speed; the point of the five-door variant is to make it a bit more appealing to anyone with people to put in the back. Or things. The reported 332 litres of load space now available with the rear seats lowered is not going to set any records - but it's 85 litres more than is available to an early Jimny adopter in the UK (if a long way shy of the two-seat LCV version). Either way, you are probably never going to see one - unless you're planning on becoming a Maruti Suzuki customer in the near future. Production in India is already said to have kicked off, with sales due to begin in May.

Shame. One of these with a 2.0 or even a 1.6 tdi would be a cracking little machine.

I'm ashamed to say I used to snigger at these as they drove by- that all changed when we got 1 as a hire car in moutain terrain- absolutely fantastic little machine which coped admirably without any issues. Whatever you think of them they are capable.

Is it missing a B pillar, in photo 4, or is that more RX 8 and I just can’t see it on the other shots?

It just shows what a load of nonsense local emissions regulations are when the car is not available here but 1000s will likely be sold in India. No joined up thinking whatsoever and enormous overestimation of this country’s impact on climate.

Suzuki's Microsized G-wagon, love 'em, shame it doesn't meet current emission legislation, practical, functional pit sized 4wd.

Which current emission regulation does the Jimny not meet?

They are tiny. But the proportions are good so it looks like it could be G Wagon size.

From one of the many articles on the end of UK Jimny sales.

The quirky Suzuki Jimny’s UK residency will end in 2021 after the manufacturer announced it could no longer pass tightening emissions laws, despite being relaunched just two years ago.

Unsurprisingly, the problem area seems to be its high carbon dioxide emissions, which Suzuki made clear was an issue in 2018. All car makers are now under pressure to meet average emissions across all models of 95g/km of carbon dioxide.

Unfortunately for the Jimny, it isn’t anywhere near clean enough, oozing a rather smutty 154g/km from its 1.5-litre petrol engine combined with manual transmission.

These look great, would it be possible to do a private import from India?

It's been a long time since I read about it so i can't remember the details but is there not something in the regs that particularly punishes light cars with relatively high emissions? I.e. You get more leeway with emissions if you sell heavy cars.

When you think of all the other cars that Suzuki collaborate on in Japan, re-badging each others vehicles, why didn’t they just partner with Toyota and use one of their engines?

Seems like a huge missed opportunity

Zero excuse for this not being on sale all over Europe with a 1.0l 3 cylinder turbo. I really don't understand what they're playing at.

Agreed. At launch, I always wondered why Suzuki did not not use the existing 1.4 Boosterjet engine already fitted in the Vitara and modern Swift Sports?
They ended up a white elephant with a n/a 1.5.

Yes please. I also like this colour. I'll have mine in boggo spec as it won't be doing vast miles.
Currently in Borneo where I've seen Jimnys' for sale at sensible money secondhand. Also every car here is petrol, not seen an EV in Malaysia at all so not sure the UK is saving the planet at all.

They put an engine in it to suit its biggest markets. The Jimny has never has or ever would have been a big seller in the UK.

The current Suzuki range doesn't look that competitive and sales figures are pretty terrible. They only managed to shift 17k cars last year (less than the year before) with a range of 7 cars. MG managed 51k (5 cars). How long before they go the way of Daihatsu and Mitsubishi?
