Anyone seen the some force has said they are going to visit any listed on their database using no genuine TV services on boxes or modified fire sticks!

I have such a device linked to an email address person I got it off didn't enter my personal info so not sure how they would know!

A 'golden age of streaming' was meant to cure the issue of piracy - however, as always, greed has scuppered the plan

It's a bit sensationalist. Only the ones profiting from it are the targets really:

“In 2021, two individuals, Paul Faulkner and Stephen Millington were sentenced to a total of 16 months in prison for watching unauthorised streams,” FACT notes.

While it’s certainly true that consuming pirated streams is against the law, the cited convictions were not just for the “watching” part.

Millington, for example, also developed the pirate Kodi addon Supremacy, while Faulkner operated pirate IPTV service TV Solutions. Both also earned significant revenue through these illicit operations.

I'd be surprised if they prosecuted watchers - its the sellers they will usually go after

Funny how if someone owes you money it's a civil matter and police don't want to know.

Suddenly you owe sky money and police dedicate all their resources to catching someone daring enough to not pay to watch Burnley Vs stoke.

Netflix is still dirt cheap for what you are getting.

It may be but there's no need for the police to get involved in the investigation.

This should be a private prosecution by sky and/or any other entities who are being deprived.

The 'lower income' have the option of cancelling the service, so how is it exploitation?

Where is the line drawn? If your hobby car is nicked I could decide you should privately prosecute. You might have multiple cars and the insurance will pay after all.

Commenting mainly so people don’t think this is me!

Mind you I do think the streaming services have become too fragmented though.

I used to have one, brilliant for those Saturday afternoon football matches where they're not on TV for some old rule about not televising so people go out to a match instead.

Other than that we usually just watched the same Sky TV we have downstairs but in the bedroom.

Haven't subscribed for a few years now though.

What I am interested in is why the people who are happy to steal online content would almost always never go into a shop and steal items off a shelf. Why is it ok to steal digital content?

These arrests are of people selling access to copyrighted material. They are profiting from an illegal activity. Pretty cut and dried.

Stealing implies theft. Taking the property of another person with no intention of returning it.

That’s not really applicable to streaming online content. Copyrighted material is put online by people who own it and want to sell access to it. But the same copyrighted material is left lying around where you can watch it for free with minimal effort.

You are arguably reducing their ability to monetise it. But if you would not have paid to watch it they have not actually lost anything.

The beauty of Netflix, Amazon Prime or Spotify is that they have developed an offer that people are willing to pay for, even if they could find most of the content for free. It’s convenience and packaging.
