Sold my car which is only 6 months old, when I bought it new, I paid £950 for the first full year's road tax, (as part of the OTRP).

Question: How much refund do I get and how much does the new owner need to pay for the next 6 months ?

I assumed at first I got 50% of £950 back, and the new owner had to pay 6 months i.e £475

However, this quote from Carwow suggests different.

If you request a refund within a year of the car being first registered, you will be eligible for a refund based on whichever is lower: the first tax payment when you registered the vehicle, or the rate for the second tax payments onwards

This implies I would only get £82.50 (full year being £165) - which I can live with
if the new owner only then has to pay £82.50 (for next 6 months)

That sounds right. Sounds like a GR Yaris…..I think the £950 is pretty much swallowed up on 1st registration so yes, if you immediately SORN’d or sold you would be entitled to 11/12 of £165.

New owner then taxes at the annual rate of £165 whenever they buy. Nice little earner for the government if ownership changes early in the first year!

Yes GR Yaris.

The buyer will be happy to hear that it's only at the £165 rate, and I never banked on a lumpy refund so no loss to me.
