In some lights it looks like something has been 'stuck on' to give it a max power style vent, but in others it looks like a proper 'cut away' job.

Either way it seems useless.

Its a NASA duct that provides forced induction. The mod can be combined with water spray induction to good effect. You can see the blue hose from the bonnet area connected to the underside of the air box.

Its does perform a function.

If you look at the engine bay pic, you can see Induction piping - leading to the airbox.
The duct you see externaly is the inlet for that piping .

As what Daftlad said , although its also reffered to as a "NACA duct" - Naional Advisory Commitee foe Aeronautics .

Whoops, I presumed if it was functional it would be forced induction, however for some reason i though the engine bay pic was looking up, not down, therfore the induction was in a bit of a weird place.

Sorry guys, it's early, I get it now.

They don't call me Daftlad for nothing
However,
The duct is a NASA duct. NASA's name was changed from
National Aeronautics and Space Administration to National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics AFTER the device was developed....

Snake oil? I thought NACA ducts and water sprays only had any use on turbocharged cars.

The 924 turbo had a NACA duct on the bonnet and my mate had water injection on his Integrale to cool the charged air giving more bhp.

I might be wrong though.

Snake Oil? Not understanding
Forced induction, produced via the NASA duct is a good thing and boosts power. (its used widely on Superbikes).
Water spray, less certain of the effects but I always understood that anything that improves oxygen content in the charge will benefit power.

OK so how much better power/performance does this result in? Maybe the seller can tell us when they turn up on this thread...

BTW, looking at my airbox (as you do), where does the air get into it? I've not had a torch into the bowels of the engine bay to see if there is an inlet at the bottom ... must be I guess.

I suspect, very strongly, that Dreadnought Garage in Scotland may have been involved with the work for this guy. They should be able to provide the benefits in terms of power gains - assuming I'm correct.

The air comes in from the bottom via something like a 4" diameter inlet. The inlet being more or less flush with the cars floor. You need to get under the car (as I do to polish the chassis) to see it......

Snake oil:

a slang term for any one of a multitude of substances or mixtures sold by a traveling medicine show for which extravagant curative and restorative claims were made.

Many thanks. Yet another day goes by where I have learned something.

I always thought water sprays were aimed at intercoolers... maybe the guy forgot to say he added a turbo to his T350!

As I understand, the prime function of water injection systems, not sprays, is to supress detonation caused by high temperature and or pressure within the combustion chamber. Its most common use is with forced induction where over pressure and heat is a concerm.
Water works to control this onset of detonation by cooling. I can see the benfits with a normaly aspirated engine, and certainly with an engine running any form of ram air.

I'd have thought that while they may be a small ram air effect the main benefit of this would be that the intake temp would be low and nice cold, dense air = power.

Is that a torch holder, for easy access to light if one needs to see anything around the car on a cold and dark night, with no-one around to help? Or is it a black vent??

AFTER the device was developed - I'd agree with you on that but what about poor old Giovanni? http://faculty.rmwc.edu/tmichalik/venturi.htm
is he now lost in the mists of time?
