Ferrari here I come (hopefully!)
Discussion
The itch has become too great and the Domestic Management has given it's approval for me to move on from my MY2001 Boxster S and buy a 360 Modena. I know a little about cars and read a lot of the mags however I hoped some of you with real experience might offer recommendations??
My Budget is £70K max and I'd like to avoid the flappy paddles.
Any other tips, such as annual budgeting, spec, insurance etc. would really be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Your budget's fine for what you want.
Annually you probably ought to put 3-4k aside. If it ends up not needed when you end up selling it, take a nice holiday.
Spec - not sure on 360s. There usually aren't bucket loads of options on these cars. Seats and colour schemes are usually the main things. Daytona seats look good in a 360. And colour wise red exterior will make the car much easier to sell later (black or crema interior). Personally I think I prefer black or TdF blue 360s.
Oh yes, make sure you get Scuderia shields on the car. They look the business.
And you HAVE to budget for a Tubi to be fitted (2k ish) as the standard car sounds rubbish.
Insurance depends on your circumstances. Could be as low as 800 quid or as high as 3k. A-plan, Footman James, Tesco (I kid you not) and AON are all worth a call.
The other thing to make sure you do is get an independent inspection sorted, no matter where you buy the car from.
Give someone like Verdis a call for no nonsense advice and some lines into good cars. I'd avoid main dealers - you pay over the odds for the car in the first place, and are in no way guaranteed a higher quality car.
Have you also considered 355s? I'm somewhat biased, but they are one of the most beautiful shapes ever to come out of Ferrari, and are a much more delicately designed motor all round. Would leave you a lot of loose change in your budget, still goes very well and turns heads like you wouldn't believe. They also sound amazing and it's also likely to hold its value better.

With regards to the spec, the two items I would have included in my criteria are Xenon`s and (very rare) a sunroof.
When searching for mine I drove several examples, for my own enjoyment I prefered the F1 gearbox. I also tried a couple of 355`s which I thought were beautiful but alas not for me.
As regards costs , after 11 months of ownership, which have been trouble free (5k miles only) , I expect, as pointed out, to pay heavily come service time.
As you will be purchasing one of the planets most desirable cars, expect some jealousy.

Interestingly, in 2.75yrs of ownership I haven't once suffered from jealousy in the 355. Thumbs up, people asking for a ride, to take photos etc. But never any of the crap that you get with other cars. Strange but true.
General servicing isn't horrendous. But it's when additional things need sorting that the bills stack up.

.
Not quite the same, but I rented a 360 for a long weekend in April and had nothing but positive 'attitude' towards it (both me and my Mrs are youngish so I thought that would make things worse'. People at petrol stations commented that it was a lovely car, people went out of their way to pull over on some of our narrow country lanes etc etc... it was so much nicer than driving a 911 - much closer to that attitude I used to get in my Lotus.

I know someone who could keep it ticking over and garaged until you come back

Great advice folks......THANKS!
Nick.....just a bit too much for me at that price...the car is obviously the mutts nuts though.
I drove a 355 recently and while it sounded faster than my Boxster S there didn't appear to be much in it. Build quality between 355 and 360 appears to be very noticable too. I'll keep looking around and thanks for the heads-up and advice fellas

Rest assured, there's a world of difference between Boxster S and 355 performance

Slightly biased opinion, but go for it
I wouldn't discount the F1 box unless you've tried it, it's great fun to drive. To be fair I didn't try the manual, but headed for red F1 as red is the most popular colour & over 60% of 360 sold were F1. I was hedging agaainst having to sell in a hurry, figured most popular colour/box would sell quicker.
Owned it now for 18mths it & would take a lot to prise it out of my hands !
And the Tubi box is a must

Rest assured, there's a world of difference between Boxster S and 355 performance Build quality on 355 is at best patchy, agreed. However, when 430s start to arrive in decent numbers, 360 residuals will get even softer. Older 360s are trading same money as late 355s.... be careful !
And on the flip side, I'm not sure there's such a yawning chasm between the 355 and 360 in the real world...
I think, generally, they're not that badly screwed together. And certainly not for an Italian car. 360 may well be better still though.

Absolutely. I think a 355 is a very difficult car to exploit to it's full performance until you've had it a while. It took me a few weeks to learn where the gear change sweet spots were, and how best to keep it in the cooking 5500-8000 range. Fantastic satisfaction when you do get it consistently right though. My Noble had made me a very lazy road driver, as there was power anywhere in the rev range in any gear!
