Smoke ban 'will widen health gap'

Now is it just me, or is this totally the wrong way of looking at things? Rather than saying "It'll improve health for lots of people", they're moaning that it won't improve the health of poor people. What is this obsession with "social justice" and equality all about?

and why is it that people seem to accept in these reports/studies that it's somehow ok for poor people to smoke, as if they haven't any other pleasures?
I recall john reid getting in to hot water for saying that we can't expect poor people to stop smoking as it's one of the only pleasures they can afford...well excuse me but at £5.34 for a pack of cancer sticks if they can afford 20 a day they're either on the dodge or not poor.
why the distinction? why is it that the labour govt think that if you have no money normal rules do not apply?
"robbed an old lady and beat sh1t out of her did you? and you come from a disadvantaged council estate I hear? oh you poor misunderstood girl/boy, have a rehabilitation order"
or
"daddy not give you enough money to stop you robbing old ladies eh? you rich bastard, off to clink for 5 years"
or something along those lines...perhaps...
so why not equality across the board?
It's just like that quote, some people are just more equal than others....

Slightly unfair but I know what you mean. Same mentality as wanting to cancel guided walks in the Lake District because only middle-aged, middle-class white people were going on them...
You mean the poor can afford to drink & smoke !!
Seriously though am struggling to envisage how people can be described as "poor" when they have suffiecent disposable income to spend £5 a day on cancer sticks & spend their time/money ambling to various drinking establishments.
Perhaps one way to kill 2 birds with one stone is to lower the benefits paid to these poor people in the first place, so that not only can they no longer afford to deliberatly poison themselves with tabs, but in addition they wont have to endure the secondary effects of smoking from the affluent people who can afford to congregate in such drinking establishments.
In facts its 3 birds that are now deceased, since it would also reduce the amount of Tax that Mr Brown just loves plundering from my monthly salary.
