Euro 6 cars obviously won't be affected by ULEZ/CAZ for a while and for some 'vehicles' like large SUV, trucks and Vans the EV or petrol alternatives don't stack up.

My musings in this thread is around the Euro 6 'premium' car market ie BMW/Mercedes/Audi et al.

As I heard today the most popular purchases for new cars are Petrol and now EV has claimed 2nd place over DERV.

What do you guys think will happen to the used car market for the more expensive Diesels as opposed to the sub Euro 6 smokers?

eg - Ive been offered a 2016 E Class Cab - E220d Bluetec AMG line - great condition, good miles etc for a decent price. NOrmally I'd have hoovered it up and moved it on at the later end of Summer.

BUT my feeling is the market for this type of car ie 15k and upwards cars is going to become really sticky.

What are youre thoughts on this segment guys?

As production of ICE vehicles tails off, I imagine demand for sought after versions will increase.

However, premium badge or not, a 4 cylinder diesel engine in a convertible doesn't scream future classic at me personally.

Perhaps where they are most useful, tow cars, heavy suvs, estate cars, diesels may remain desirable.

All just IMO.

You have to look at the figures more closely, of course EV's will be more popular than diesel right now due to the incentives offered to BiK buyers (who make up most of the new car market) then look at the market you're interested in (SUV's) & the majority for sale will be diesel because that's the drivetrain that suits full size SUV's best.

Like all things buy the drivetrain that suits your needs.

The E Class Cab is a desirable and excellent car.
On auto trader there are 49 2016 cars for sale.
48 diesel. 1 petrol. 0 EV.

You will be fine.

The E350 Bluetec is the one to have, what a great engine.

^Indeed. Quite uniquely for a convertible, would make a fine towcar!

(admittedly a bit niche)

I have a 2015 BMW 535d saloon which is Euro 6 and therefore ULEZ exempt. I have followed advertised prices on AT for these cars and they seem to be holding firm, although those are asking prices of course.

The car is lovely; beautifully built and with a wonderful engine that gives a huge low revs shove and yet returns 48 mpg on a long run. Also very, very comfortable for those journeys. Great car. However, will it be seen as a nasty obsolete diesel that's worth £3.50 if I was to sell it?

Just a shame about the adblue and NOx sensor issues.

Diesel is still hugely popular in the used market. The G30 5 series for example has roughly two diesel engines models for every petrol including petrol hybrids.

I may get a G31 next, potentially a 540i but a 530d for say £5k less with 10mpg+ more makes the decision more challenging.

Are there not warnings about the premium suv being unable to transition fully to EV through sheer energy required to fuel them? You would imagine that with petrol models of large luxury vehicles so scarce, the large luxury diesel will still be reasonably sought after?
