Hi folks,
So what's the process for buying a car with private plates that the owner wants to retain?
How long does it take before I can put the original plates back on?
Is it weeks of form filling and waiting for DVLA to process things or is it faster than that?
Basically I have seen a car for sale (private not dealer) that I like but the owner wants to keep the reg. No problem with that but what I don't want to do is buy a new (to me) car and then have to wait ages before I can use it.
Dumb question probably but I have never bought a car privately that has a reg that the owner wants to keep.

When a plate change is done online, DVLA will email you (or rather, the present owner) a certificate to use to get plates made up, if the old ones are no longer present. But the old V5c will be invalid and you'll need to wait for the new one to arrive to do a change of keeper. So the road tax (VED) will also have to remain in the seller's name until you get a new V5c. It's all a bit of a ballache really, he should have removed it earlier if he wanted to keep it.
If you're happy to buy the car with only a receipt as ownership (V5c is registered KEEPER, not necessarily the legal owner), go for it.

You'll have to wait until the new V5 arrives in a week or two before you can transfer ownership/keeper.
Or transfer ownership with the old reg, then you tax it and insure it.
You'll then have to change the reg number and assign the old one to the previous owner. And change your insurance. But its his risk as you are under no obligation to give it back to him.

Owner removes the private plate from the car and keeps it on retention to use again on another car. 'The vehicle’s original registration number is usually reassigned to it automatically when you take off a private number'. Owner gets new log book with non-private reg. You get car with non-private reg.

This seems the most sensible and workable solution - I would also as part of the deal get the seller to get the new “original “ reg plates made up and fitted / or at least supplied - when he applies online to retain the number they will send him a certificate valid for 3 days to get the new plates made up anyway.
