For 25ish years been driving around with a "cherished" / "dodgy" / "private" / "chav" ......number plate(s).

Over Christmas received a Notice (without telling me why) and so filled in the driver details and returned the form.

This week received a letter informing me over the fact that it is due to the registration mark.

What I am trying to understand is - do people get an initial warning or go straight to, fine vs court hearing request?

"Banged to rights" so not disputing. Simply would like to know if people initially receive a "warning" ?

Does spacing comply with regs?

If you have received a NIP/s.172 then I imagine it will be a straight fine? If there was going to be a warning they would have just written to the RK without bothering with the rest. I think these days the mobile speed camera operators make note of misspaced registrations, and in some areas (Surrey) they accept 3rd party reports of it.

I believe you get a fine in the first instance, and for repeat offences you "may" lose the right to use that registration. I don't know for sure. I do know that the public cannot report you to the DVLA for an offending plate - they only take reports from the police.

Usually it would be from a roadside stop and your issued with a FPN and a compliance form that has to be stamped by an MOT Testing station. I've always been lead to believe it's two stricks and a third can be confiscated by the DVLA.

"Non endorsable officer witnessed conditional offer of fixed penalty" - £100.

Guess s/he must have been in another vehicle and was having a quiet day.

When i had one a few years ago by Gloucestershire constabulary, it gave me the option of emailing a picture of the car with now legal plates.

Which i did and received a reply stating no further action would be taken.

Sounds like you've done alright if in 25 years this is the first time you've had a fine for an unambiguous (from your own description of being bang to rights) numberplate offence.

Should count yourself lucky it's not endorseable (yet).

Surprised it passed the MOT. It's a vehicle excise offence so never likely to become endorsable.

There was this Private Members' Bill but it hasn't been updated since 2021, so perhaps not going anywhere.

More likely it's either just ignored by the tester (in the same way some look the other way on decats) or it's entirely possible OP might change back to standard plates for the MOT, gets the pass and refits their usual ones later. That seems to be the go to method for some of the cars you regularly see with adjusted plates round this way in Surrey - one of two days a year where the plate amazingly ends up spaced correctly.

Unless it's a real jobsworth nerdy tester most won't bother, lack of bsau mark is usually just ignored too.

Many will keep a pair of legally spaced plates in the car and if pulled just swop them at the roadside...

Perhaps they’ve had a change of tactic. Instead of wasting the time it takes to stop you and have a ‘friendly’ word, they just process it via ANPR. Seems the right thing to do if so, after all, it’s not as if they have oodles of spare time to be arsing about with trivial ego plate offenders.

I just get the concept of an illegal plate… why?

Surely if you wanted fellow road users to play the game of guess the word you could just print a vinyl and stick to the rear bumper?

Anyways… first time in 25 years seems a good run.

'Fraid that would be no use whatsoever as I've never been in a Chavplate situation myself.

Never will be either. smile
