Merc B - w245 - high clutch pedal (not biting point)

Hi, my clutch pedal is really high when released, the biting point is low/normal but the pedal really high.

I have looked and can see there is some plastic bit with a metal spike out the top above the pedal , which is compressed in when the pedal is released. It’s a bit loose, so expect it’s something around there where the issue is.

Anyone know what this is and how to fix? Everything I google is about high biting point, but that’s not the issue.

I will try to upload photos, with the part circled & you can see how high the clutch pedal is at rest.
