Me again, still on the trail of a 911. Thank you for all those who've helped me so far.
Another impossible question but hopefully a little more succinct and to the point!

With a budget of up to £30K max, estimated useage of 5K per Year (company car for serious miles) in your 'opinion' should I;

a. buy a 930 3.3 Turbo (sub 50K miles) pre G50, app £15K. Slightly newer one (with G50) nearer 20K.
Either way put £10-15K in the bank.

b. Buy a sub 50K miles 964 Carrera 4, app £20K and put £10K in the Bank!

c. Buy a very tidy 993 Carrera 4, sub 40K miles for app £28K and blow the lot!!

Now I need to narrow down my search and be more specific I know and I also need to drive all three and see what does it for me. That said, as a first 911 are there any that are 'old hat' and should be avoided unless I'm a real grease monkey?!!

Last SFQ I promise!
Grateful for any advice.

Why buy a Carrera 4 at all? Carrera 2 gives greater "purity"...as to the 930s - I've never liked those that I've drvien, but they have all been 4 speeds...

All IMHO and i'm sure someone will be along to give an opposite opinion!

Oh, for £30k I'd think about buying a 993 C2...or a 964RS...but don't let's open that can of worms!

Well on the turbo/normally aspirated decision it's a bit of a personal thing - either you enjoy the laggy wait, wait, holy sheeet feeling of a turbo or you'd rather have the more responsive and accessible performance of a NA machine.

On the 964 or 993 decision, personally I'd go 993 because I think they're the most lovely looking shape. There are also some non-negligible advantages like less onerous maintenance (valve clearances don't need doing due to hydraulic tappets), generally less oil leak prone, etc. However, if I was looking to buy a non-turbo 993 then I'd rather have a Carrera 2 narrow body (as opposed to an 'S') with varioram (post early '96 I think) and forget about the 4WD. Maybe you want 4WD for a specific reason?

And forget the number on the speedo. Concentrate on buying a good car. Re: all the models don`t be too specific, ie. if a 993 don`t worry if a vario ram or not. Buy the better individual car.

You are treating this as if all the cars out there are the same and it`s just pick a specific model age mileage colour etc. Nothing could be further from the truth. Some gems to be had but sadly a lot more dogs.

Buy a late, clean G50 coupe (either 3.2 or turbo), or a 964 turbo, or a 964RS, or a 993 C2.

My choice? Depends how much i'd use it.
Sunny weekends, the odd trip away? "old school"
As above, but a bit more excitement? "964 turbo"
Track weapon you can drive on the road? "964RS"
Something you can use every single day, and you might no plan to initially but it'll get that way? "993"

You'd be amazed at how much 993 you get for £24k...

All IMHO, but nice to be in that position. Goooood luck!

For up to 30k you can get a 996 or 993 or 964 or 3.2 Carrera with varying money left to bank . If you just want a fast capable road car that doesn't need more than an annual service then an early 996 will do it. A late 993 might cost a bit more and any 964 will cost a lot less but you can be stung by any one of these cars as Henry implies. Its difficult to advise you without a bit more info on what you want from it. If you are really up for the real deal PORSCHE then its got to be a 964RS - iconic 911 , hard core , quick , wont lose you too much money ( the right car will go up in value) ... but not a daily driver and not to be confused with the average soft centred sports coupe.

Great thanks chaps.
I'm going to go for a 993, subject to finding the right one.
People keep telling me to ignore the miles but this has always been an issue for me, whatever the marque.
Now on the hunt for a low mileage C2 or C4!

I had heard that the c4 was the superior car for obvious reasons but most of you suggest the C2, why?
Apart from the obvious what are the key differences with owning either of these?

Thanks again.

All good advice...but I'd recommend one more thing on top of the above before you decide - TEST DRIVE THEM ALL.

Personally, there would be no contest - I'd go for the pure 911 hit in the form of a 964RS (if you're like me and don't care about details like ride comfort and tramlining...lol)

Another option if it's occasional use could be a tuned 964 C4 (one of the independents had a nice looking supercharged example for £20k recently)...£10k buys a lot of maintenance

Good luck!
