981 GTS to 991.1 GTS - thoughts?
Discussion
Morning gents.
How much of a jump is a 991.1 GTS over a 981 GTS, in terms of performance, an event to drive, etc?
I'm an owner of the latter, never had the pleasure of driving the former, but don't feel like speculatively wasting dealers time at the moment as I'm firmly in the "I wonder" stage. However, part of me thinks the 991 GTS might be more of everything I love about the 981 GTS.
On paper at least, the difference seems quite large: 3.4L 340bhp plays 3.8L 430bhp. I suspect the 911 might be a touch heavier, but not by much surely. At the limit, I suspect they're quite different, with classic 911 playing mid-engine poise.
Same generation PDK, infotainment, etc. Not too bothered here, as long as I can bluetooth my phone I'm good.
I've got a saved AT search that I keep an eye on. Looking at £75k for a decent one. Would probably only get mid 40s trade in on my GTS? Seems like a big cost to change...
What do you think? Has anyone owned / driven both?
Edit: Cayman, not Boxster. Should have clarified initially.

I think that change of car is more about 'feel' and type and a bit of status.
I'm thinking that as the 991 is more GT, its a coupe - whereas the 981 is obvs a 2 seater open top
One is designated as the 'only and only real Porsche' the other is the entry level pretender, despite mid engine, being the better layout.
So that said, you're going to 'feel' different when you get in it, when you look at it and when you drive it.
But the stats and road speed might not change so much.
Do you need the size change? the rear seats? the coupe feel? a change for changes sake?
I had that budget recently... I'd not got a 981 in the garage already like you and I went Spyder.
If you've had the 981 for a good while and feel itchy for a change...scratch it.

To pick up on some of the things you mentioned:I'm thinking that as the 991 is more GT, its a coupe - whereas the 981 is obvs a 2 seater open top

Firstly, I should've clarified it's the Cayman not the Boxster.
I've no requirements around extra space. Also, being perhaps on the slightly younger side of Porsche drivers, I don't quite get the 'real' Porsche vs 'pretender' thing. However, point taken that it's still their flagship sports car, so sure I'd hope there was some heightened specialness compared to their other models. I guess I feel the CGTS sounds and goes so gloriously well, part of me thinks that 991.1 GTS with extra power and torque is going to be all of that but turned up a notch or two. Or, as you say, maybe the 911 will be a more GT / refined experience, as the Cayman is quite loud. You can hear the engine constantly.
Regarding your Spyder, lovely choice. I'm not an open top guy, but I must admit the Spyder is a head turner. I was staying at a country house not so long back, and there was a 718 Spyder in the car park. It was in a metallic purple colour and my word it looked sensational. It really was a "wow" car.
ahh ok sorry...Cayman GTS.... makes the jump even more nuanced imo.
Subjectively I suspect the 911 will make you 'feel' better in terms of model heirachy..it just will.
The look, sound and dynamics will all play into this.
Objectively I suspect the CGTS is the 'better' car, just based on it's size relative to the road and the engine location.
Personally I'd be deciding which I prefer the look of
what the power to weight ratio difference is
Whether the size/space is a deciding factor.
And which holds its money better.
in that order
Lovely situation to be in.
