In the process of fitting the ex Transit Pinto - and the exhaust manifold seems to pose a major problem as the down pipe runs straight down onto the old Xflow engine mount - I have extended them back as per the instructions.

Are car manifolds different? Should I pinch an inch by putting the longer mount on the drivers side.

There is variation in the manifolds. The RS2000 manifold exits nearer the back of its casting so as to overcome the engine mount problem. Some of the Cortina/Capri exhaust manifolds also exit towards the rear of the casting. I know when we originally built Green Dragon (RIP) we fitted a pinto from a Sierra but had to use the Cortina exhaust manifold (and that was on the chassis designed for the OHC unit) The other option if room allows is to modify the down pipe.

I looked at the modified down pipe option - turn would have to commence at very top of down pipe.

Next question has anyone got a suitable manifold?

Hi Jon,

My engine (mk 5 Cortina Pinto) uses std. Cortina manifold with short pipe onto flexible to the silencer.

Engine has special mounts to move engine to left to clear column (Originally it was a crossflow chassis)

I haven't tried fitting the RS2000 manifold but it is a tubular 4-1 not cast. I can send pictures if you want.

(See email as well)

Have used mounts that have put the engine far enough to the left to clear steering column. At the moment the engine is hanging on a chain - almost in position but now have to cut back gearbox mounts. Typically I ran out of cutting disks on Sat afternoon just after all local sources of disks shut.

The gearbox is a C3 Auto box.

Today my back is killing me so cannot do anything.

So I will list the problems I've had.

1. Realise exhaust will lead straight down onto the engine mount.

2. The spigot bearing had broken up and the remains had welded themselves in - more than 2 hours chiseling the remains.

3. Mate gearbox to engine - engine will not turn over with gearbox in place. After some head scratching realise this is because there is no spacer plate. Solution space with washers - engine turns.

4. Went to move Boris - brakes seized on - Jacked up rear only to find it was front disks. Wheel nuts had been tightened with a gun - more time wasted.

5. Lower engine in - rear rocker keeps fouling on box section cross member in front of battery bay - should I cut this and raise it 3 inches?

6. Gearbox mountings foul gearbox and have to be cut back - make new ones.

At this time I am wondering why I did not just replace the 1300 Xflow with a 1600 and have done with it - Boris would be on the road again. Hopefully when finished the performance will bring a smile to my face which will eliminate the bad memories of this engine swop.

encountered some of the probs you are having on borris autoing 1600 xflow samuri
i reckon you need 10.5 inches between georbox mountings to get a c3 in looking at shaz's geep theres more like 5.5 - 6 inches and angled box section coming down to form mount sammi being different mounting to a pair of in-riggers but still requiring lots cutting off
as for cutting discs i found some brick and ceramic diamond cutters in my local trade warehouse for 75p plus vat each which are steel discs with diamond powder coated on the outside 5mm of the steel - they arnt as abrasive as steel cutting discs but as they remove about 1/4 as much material as the stone type discs they cut at approx the same speed and seem to cut for about 5-10 times longer AND importantly stay the same diameter
my 1600 pinto geep was origionally built with a c3 so if theres any measurements you want i can probably get them [given time cos geep lives with jagojan 7 miles away and she's using it as her daily driver]
i think later geeps had the top frame at the rear of engine bay higher to clear pintos
i'm not sure what manifold is on geep but its likely to be cortina or capri i think
take a day of rest then attack it again my auto geep is a pleasure to drive and will certainly be worth the effort
Good luck

Thanks for those words of encouragement DRSEG. I suspect little will get done till next weekend - work tomorrow.

Thanks especially for the dimensions.
