Decided that I need to register a domain name and produce a home web site. So I logged onto Wanadoo's suggested provider http://www.netbenefit.com and entered a few suggestions. Some were not available and you can click on the name for details of the owner.

These details give name, address and email address. Now I find that a bit worrying especially where private individuals are concerned.. Surely there is some data protection element here?

Is there anyway I can ensure my private address is not disclosed.

Who is your service provider - might want to use them if they have protected information.

I had the same problem with my site ( www.stefancarlton.net ) where the url is my name, my car was featured (with reg plate) along with loads of other identifying stuff (like PH links) and a simple whois showed my address, telephone number etc.

I spoke to my host (Jamie @ register1.net) who simply told me how to change the details to be their's. It's still my account/name but if anyone does a Whois all they get is register1.net's address/tel/fax... Much better and much safer IMO unless you are a bussiness.

A good example of how bad that can be, www.barryboys.co.uk had some members who were been right 's and upset someone, the whois gave the site owners address (probably still does). Don't know what happened as a result but there you go.

On the topic of hosts, click the banner - very good cheap hosting (even better now the upgrades been done ). Even better the techies don't talk down to me when I ask a stupid question Bet they laugh mind

And it gets worse

Just checked out a friends domain name and not only does it include their name and address - the home phone number is there as well.

I'm certain you can hide these details if you want to from all WHOIS searches..

So the only people that could get their hands on your info are the domain/hosting companies..

If you put someone else's address in there then not sure if it really truly registered to you

Thanks,
Dave.

You can hide your details on domain tags. the search will return "This is registered to a private user who has elected to withold their details" or something.

I have a .co.uk domain and have opted out of the whois register. Got mine through www.namesco.co.uk, they gave me the option to opt in or out when I bought the domain.

With .uk domains, you can 'opt out'

you just click a button, Et Voila, your Address details become (in Register1, just Click Manage Domain, Domain Extras, OptOut)

Domain Name:

Registrant:

Registrant's Address:

THE REGISTRANT IS AN INDIVIDUAL WHO HAS ELECTED TO
HAVE THEIR ADDRESS OMITTED FROM THE WHOIS DATABASE

Obviosuly, you are only permitted to do this IF you are a Private Individual.

For .coms, its a little more difficult, But, As Stefan stays, you cans simply Mirror the details we enter for the technical contact into and Admin and Organisation contact areas.

With Register1 you get to edit all these details LIVE (note Optout takes 5 mins to process)

Feel free to drop me a line if you have any queries.

alas the registry REQUIRES valid and accurate contact details be provided

Just yesterday I had a complaint email from Nominet about some of the domains we host for clients using 'inaccurate' details.

For individuals, Nominet permit details to be witheld.

Of course, you can always lie...

Surely this must come under the data projection act - is this why the co.uk have an opt-out?

Thankfully I have checked my site and the info is withheld.
